The Kansas City Royals lost first baseman Eric Hosmer on Thursday during their 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Hosmer strained his shoulder while reaching for a ball that ended up going into the outfield for a triple. Eventually he was removed from the game and replaced by catcher Brayan Pena at first base.
Fortunately for the Royals, Hosmer said post-game that the injury didn't look particularly bad.
"I just kind of reached back and landed awkwardly on it. Hopefully, it's not serious. Nothing is torn," Hosmer said. "[I'll] just take it day by day. If it doesn't feel better, I'll get an MRI and check it out."
Hosmer wasn't the only one affected by shoulder problems during the game on Thursday, with shortstop Alcides Escobar being knocked out of the 5-4 loss as well with a similar knock on his right shoulder. Royals manager Ned Yost said after the game that Hosmer will sit out their series opener against the Cleveland Indians on Friday night.
