The Kansas City Royals lost the rubber match of their three-game series against the Cleveland Indians, 15-3. That marks the second time in a week that the Royals allowed 15 runs to the Indians.
As was the case last week when the Royals were undone by a seven-run ninth inning, a big inning by Cleveland put the game out of hand this Sunday, as well. The Indians scored 10 run in the bottom of the fifth, eight of which were charged to Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar, who allowed nine runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked three. Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera provided the big blow, clearing the bases with a grand slam off of Royals reliever Everett Teaford, giving Cleveland an 11-1 lead.
Alex Gordon was one of the few bright spots for Kansas City, hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning for his lone hit of the day. Cabrera, Jack Hannahan and Lou Marson each had three hits for the Indians.
The 71-88 Royals will finish their season with a three-game series at home against the 86-73 Detroit Tigers, who can clinch the AL Central title outright with a win or a Chicago White Sox loss.
