Turner Gill Out As Head Football Coach At Kansas

In an official release by the school, Kansas football coach Turner Gill has been relieved of his coaching duties after a 2-10 season. Kansas Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger delivered the announcement on Sunday .

"After a thorough evaluation of our football program," Zenger said, "I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference. I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches."

Gill is still owed some $6 million dollars by the school after signing a five-year $10 million extension in December of 2009. Zenger informed Gill of the decision on Sunday afternoon and said that a national search for his successor would begin immediately. In the meantime, Zenger said that recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell had been named as interim coach.
