The Iowa State Cyclones were one of the Big 12’s surprises this season and warranted a spot in the NCAA Tournament tonight with the announced match-up of the Cyclones at the No. 8 seed in the South region playing against the storied Connecticut program as the No. 9 seed.

The winner will have to go on to face Anthony Davis and the Kentucky Wildcats (most likely) in the second round (er, third round technically), so there’s likely going to be a short trip to the tournament for either team. But the Cyclones would have warranted a slightly higher seed if they had shown up stronger in the Big 12 tournament. Instead they have a hard road ahead.

The Cyclones are one of six Big 12 teams that made the tournament.
