Charlie Weis gave a comprehensive press conference after the recent Kansas spring football game and it's clear that the new head coach believes the Jayhawks have a long way to go before they reach respectability. Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps were exciting to watch in their KU debuts, but this was a team in need of a talent infusion at several spots on the roster. Weis seems to realize it's a long road ahead for the Jayhawks.
"I think we've taken a bunch of steps, but I think we have a bunch of steps to go," he said. Too many times, coaches give you some kind of phrase to sugar coat it, but for us to be competitive on a weekly basis, we have a lot of work to do. Offensively, we're ahead of our defense, but I truly believe that we're going to be much improved on defense. Not only philosophically, do I believe in what they're doing, but I do believe that with some of the guys coming in interjected with the people here, we'll be much improved."
The good news is that Weis has done a good job so far addressing that talent issue and has brought in some solid recruits and transfers. There's also a long time between the present and when the college season kicks off. At the very least, there's reason for hope and a coach who knows what needs to happen between now and then.
