West Virginia's Kevin Jones had 30 points, including the game winner in double overtime to put the Mountaineers on top 85-85 over Kansas State in front of a sellout crowd of 15,004 at Wichita's INTRUST Arena.
K State coach Frank Martin failed to surpass his mentor and former boss on the Wildcat bench, WVU head coach Bob Huggins, in a back-and-forth game that saw nine lead changes and 17 ties. Jones had 30 points (six of them key overtie scores) and 12 rebounds. K State was led by Rodney McGruder (20 points) and freshman Thomas Gipson recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The loss is Kansas State's first of the year, putting them at 5-1, while West Virginia improves to 5-2. Martin repeatedly stated in the postgame that he wouldn't celebrate a moral victory, but continually complimented the Wichita crowd and discussed future games at the facility.
"It was awesome - my hats off to the fans and the City of Wichita. The people who had this building built gave us the opportunity to come down here and do this. It was a great environment, and our fans were phenomenal. I am disappointed we let our fans down today."
