Big 12 Basketball Numbers In The News: Missouri, Kansas Among Top 12 In Country

The latest stats and numbers that might surprise from the Big 12 basketball scene.

Following is a journalistic version of a fast break - 12-on-(Big)12 style - revealing some noteworthy numbers in Big 12 basketball that are making news this week:

.800 - The Big 12 men's winning percentage against nonconference opponents through Monday's games. The conference's 68-17 record is the best winning percentage and fewest losses of the six major conferences.

.837 - Big 12 women also lead the country with the best winning percentage (67 out of 80) and fewest collective losses (13).

1 - The Baylor Lady Bears' national ranking. Baylor hosts No. 2 Connecticut on Sunday. The number "1" also represents the Big 12's position in RPI and the Sagarin rankings in women's basketball.

3 - Big 12 men have been ranked in the top three in conference RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) for the last three seasons. The conference is currently ranked third one month into the 2011-12 season.

5 - Number of unbeaten Big 12 teams - two men's teams (Baylor, 7-0; Missouri, 9-0) and three women's teams (Baylor, 10-0; Texas Tech, 8-0; Oklahoma State, 5-0).

9 - Number of Big 12 men's teams (out of 10) with a winning percentage of .667 or better. This is unmatched by any other conference in college basketball.

12 - Ranking of the Kansas Jayhawks men's team this week in both the USA Today and AP polls. The Jayhawks only moved up one position in both polls after beating No. 2 Ohio State this past weekend.

17 - Number of combined wins without a loss so far this season by the Baylor men's and women's teams. The women are the top-rated team in the country; the men are ranked sixth or seventh, depending on the poll.

23.5 - Points averaged last week by Thomas Robinson of Kansas in wins over Long Beach State and Ohio State. Robinson also averaged nine rebounds in the two games. For that performance, he was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

29 - Big 12 women opened the season with 29 wins against one loss.

34 - Average scoring differential between the Missouri men and its opponents in the Tigers nine nonconference wins this season. Mizzou is averaging 85.4 points a game and giving up 51.4 per contest.

64 - Missouri's 84-59 win over Navy in men's basketball was the Tigers' 64th consecutive home-court victory over a nonconference opponent. The win raised the Tigers' record to 9-0, the first time they have started the season with nine straight wins since 2006-07.
