If the Buffalo Bills decide to go for a quarterback in the 2011 NFL draft, they'll have a couple of options with the third overall pick. Those two options would be Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert and Auburn QB Cam Newton. Both players are considered the top two quarterback prospects in the 2011 NFL draft.
2011 NFL mock drafts are varied on where Newton and Gabbert may go but CBS Sports' Pete Prisco predicts Gabbert goes ahead of Newton, and lands in Buffalo.
They've been trying to replace Jim Kelly with a franchise leader for years. Now they can with a strong-armed quarterback who can handle the weather of playing outside in Buffalo.
The Bills currently have QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and if an immediate-starter isn't drafted, he will likely be the guy heading into 2011. If they do go quarterback early, it'll be Newton or Gabbert.
But is Gabbert the best choice for what head coach Chan Gailey wants to do.
Remember back to when Gailey was in Kansas City. What he did with QB Tyler Thigpen was impressive considering where Thigpen was coming from. But Thigpen's skill set -- ability to run, versatile -- is something Gailey likes.
And if that skill set is what Gailey is looking for in his quarterback, then Newton -- not Gabbert -- makes the most sense.
