NFL Network's Mike Mayock and ESPN's Todd McShay are, like most NFL draft experts, a fan of former Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert, who is expected to be one of the top two quarterbacks taken. Each has taken a stab at breaking down Gabbert's play and both came away impressed.
Mayock broke down Gabbert's play in this NFL.com video. Mayock feels that Gabbert has the head to play in the NFL as he noted several times that he's a smart player who understands the concepts involved. That's huge for a rookie quarterback because most everyone is already talented at this point. It's just a matter of understanding the concepts and what you're being asked to do. it sounds simple to say but, if it were that easy, we wouldn't have any first round busts around. Mayock's question marks, like most people, came with his footwork because he comes out of a spread offense.
McShay noted his accuracy when talking about Gabbert.
"Don't underestimate how talented he is. He's more accurate than Cam Newton."
I'd also say don't underestimate how athletic he is. Though NFL teams will want to rein in his desire to run at times, his athleticism is a bonus.
