On Tuesday morning Purdue officials released a statement indicating that they have made some sort of commitment to Matt Painter to remain head coach in the midst of his meeting with the Missouri Tigers, who are pursuing him as head coach.
Reading the tea leaves, that likely means more money for Painter, who is in the bottom rung of the Big 10 pay scale. But former Purdue head coach Gene Keady cautions that it's not all about the money. Via Indianapolis Star:
"It's about having the opportunity to win a national title with the backing of everyone. He wants to know if an assistant coach needs a car, he can get it. If something needs to be done, they'll do it, so he doesn't have to worry about all the nickel and dime stuff. It isn't about money. I want him to stay and Morgan wants him to stay."
I'm not sure this is great news for Mizzou because their largest advantage is their ability to reportedly pay more money than Purdue can.
That said, there are still indications that Painter to Mizzou will happen. The final word should be coming this week before the Final Four
