ESPN: Matt Painter Turns Down Missouri, Will Stay At Purdue

Wow. This is quite amazing. Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Wednesday afternoon that Purdue head coach Matt Painter had told Mizzou AD Mike Alden that he was accepting the Missouri Tigers head coaching job.

Shortly after that many other reporters said a decision hadn't been made either way.

And now this from ESPN:

Matt Painter has turned down Missouri and will remain coach of the Purdue men's basketball team, a source with knowledge of the situation tells ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

This isn't official yet so we'll have to see how it goes but ESPN is running with it on the front page of ESPN.com so they must feel pretty comfortable with it.

Many reporters had said recently that while a deal wasn't done it appeared Mizzou was the leader in the clubhouse. There were even reports that Purdue had called a players meeting Wednesday evening to inform them of Painter's departure but that's apparently not the case.

We'll be waiting for an official word from Purdue soon. If he did indeed turn Missouri down and decided to stay at Purdue, then I imagine Purdue would be confirming that publicly quickly.
