Two local quarterbacks are going to be fun to watch this season for their ability to be a threat in multiple ways from the quarterback position. Both James Franklin and Collin Klein are strong passers who can keep secondaries honest through the air, but they can also light up the running game at any moment. That's likely why both players made the preseason Davey O'Brien Award watch list given out every year to the nation's top quarterback.
From the release, "The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Davey O'Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O'Brien's enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics."
Other candidates include Tyler Wilson of Arkansas, Tyler Bray of Tennessee, Matt Barkley of USC and Landry Jones of Oklahoma. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 6.
