Though the starting spot is firmly set with Russell Westbrook, head coach Scott Brooks and the Oklahoma City Thunder are leaving the backup point guard role open for Eric Maynor and Reggie Jackson to battle out for in training camp.
In a report by Royce Young of DailyThunder.com, Brooks isn't quite ready to hand the job back to Maynor, who occupied the position before missing most of last year's regular season after tearing an ACL in early January.
"Going into the new season I think the minutes have to be earned," Brooks said in the report. "During the season if that happened and he came back, that would be something different. There have been a lot of games between his injury and now. I think that spot is open."
Jackson saw limited time in his first season with the Thunder after getting drafted in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft. In 45 games last season, he averaged 3.1 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game in 11.1 minutes a night.
"We have two great choices," Brooks said in the article. "Reggie's really improved his game. He's much more confident."
