Michael Phelps didn't even make it to the podium in the 400 IM at the London Olympic Games on Saturday, in what was his first Olympic loss in eight years. American teammate Ryan Lochte was the winner in this one, while Phelps finished in fourth place.
The shocking part of this isn't Phelps losing and definitely not Lochte winning, rather how Phelps didn't even make the podium and finished fourth. Many believed that whoever turned out to be better this summer between Lochte and Phelps, the two Americans would still be expected to go one and two.
That wasn't the case on Saturday.
For Phelps, this is likely is last Olympic appearances and he's on a quest to become arguably the best Olympic athlete in history. Certainly with 16 Olympic gold medals already, Phelps could make that case.
