First, Rick Ankiel was supposed to return from the disabled list on Thursday.

Then he took batting practice on Thursday.

Then reports said it was going to happen on Saturday.

There was the Alberto Callaspo trade before the Royals game against the Yankees opening up room for Ankiel.

Ankiel didn't start the game but did replace David DeJesus after the Royals outfielder sprained his thumb.

So Ankiel's official injury time was from April 24 to July 22.

Rick Ankiel's much anticipated (whatever) comeback is set to take place on Saturday, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

Royals mgr Ned Yost says OF Rick Ankiel to be activated Saturday and RHP Anthony Lerew likely to start Sunday. Means somebody else goes.

As Dutton says, if Lerew isn't going to the DL then that means someone else on the roster will be moved out of the big leagues.

We'll find out soon who it'll be.

The latest word on Royals OF Rick Ankiel is that he'll return from the disabled list today.
On Wednesday it was reported that Royals OF Rick Ankiel could return from the disabled list this week. Samuel Zuba of MLB.com reports the target date is Thursday.

Royals manager Ned Yost addressed the topic on Wednesday afternoon.

"My thinking right now is that Ankiel is due to come back here very soon," Yost said. "If we have to DL [Lerew], then we'll put Ankiel in his spot, and then on Sunday, we'll have to make a decision and make a roster move to bring up another pitcher."

Ankiel has been out since April with a strained quad.

Ankiel would move back to center field pushing David DeJesus back to right field.

Yost said it's possible the Royals could send Anthony Lerew to the disabled list after he took a line drive to the stomach in his last start.

Rick Ankiel has been out for nearly three months with a strained quad.

That time on the disabled list may be ending soon.

Royals outfielder Rick Ankiel isn't quite registering the numbers the Royals might've thought he would in his return to his rehab assignment.

Rehabbing outfielder Rick Ankiel went zero for two with a walk Sunday in Class AAA Omaha’s 2-1 loss to Albuquerque. He is three for 20 through six games of his second rehab assignment for a strained right quadriceps muscle suffered April 24.

Ankiel's been a major disappointment this year. He was originally hurt way back in April and has yet to fully come back to the field. It's already the halfway point and he's still struggling with injury. I think the Royals will regret this signing (as if they don't already).

Royals outfielder Rick Ankiel has yet to return from a quad injury suffered several weeks ago.

Ankiel was in Omaha last week but came back to Kansas City after he had a setback. He's back down in Omaha but isn't taking the field yet.

He suffered a minor setback six games into a rehabilitation stint and hasn’t played since June 15. (He wasn’t in the starting lineup for the Class AAA Omaha Royals game Sunday.) Ankiel was placed on the disabled list on May 4 and has missed 50 games, nearly one-third of the season.

Yost said Ankiel is improving and participating in baseball activities – like running and hitting in a batting cage – but just not playing in games yet.

Last we heard, the story was that Rick Ankiel would return to AAA this week. Ankiel had some sort of complications in his injury rehab assignment and the Royals brought him back to Kansas City for further tests.

According to Royals GM Dayton Moore, Ankiel is expected to play this week.

"Hopefully we can get him in a game in the middle of this week," Moore said. "He is feeling better, but if he can't go and has another setback, we'll probably get him back into Kansas City and re-evaluated."

So if Ankiel doesn't appear in a game this week, then we'll know something's up.
