Brad Cottam was waived/injured on Wednesday by the Chiefs after reportedly failing a physical.

The waived/injured designation means that Cottam was sent through the waiver wire process and, now that he's gone unclaimed, returns to the Chiefs.

The Chiefs officially placed him on the reserve/PUP list on Thursday.

He can not participate for at least the first six weeks of the season though it's unlikely he'll play in 2010 at all.

The reason for doing this move is that he doesn't count against the roster so the Chiefs can get a replacement for him, which they did with tight end Leroy Banks.

So, in the end, the Chiefs retain Cottam's rights.

The Chiefs waived Brad Cottam on Wednesday but there's a little more to it than that.

First, the Chiefs designated it as waived/injured.

This means that Cottam, as an unvested veteran, will enter the waiver wire. All 31 other teams will get a crack at signing him.

However, these teams only have 24 hours to make a move and have limited information on him so they're not likely to pick him (and his contract) up off waivers.

So once he clears waivers, he will return to the Chiefs and be placed on injured reserve missing the 2010 season.

This allows the Chiefs to save the all-important roster spot during training camp.

So, yes, Cottam was waived but more than likely he's coming back.

TE Brad Cottam suffered what appeared to be a serious neck injury in week 14 of the 2009 season. He was thereafter placed on injured reserve and had surgery on his neck.

His recovery appeared to be going well but a report from Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com says the Chiefs have waived him.

The Chiefs aren't confirming the move yet.

Cottam was expected to compete for time at tight end but his release (if accurate) isn't a major shock because he was behind Leonard Pope and rookie Tony Moeaki for playing time.

Cottam was a third round pick in 2008.
