SB Nation's Rock M Nation is understandably impressed with the way Mizzou's running backs have handled the absence of Derrick Washington. Granted the competition isn't great but the numbers aren't much different without Washington.

Mizzou ended with 46 carries for 292 yards and a healthy 6.3 yards per carry.

What most impressed me last night was not necessarily Henry Josey's speed (though that was certainly quite impressive) -- it was the willingness and ability of Josey, Moore and Murphy to run between the tackles. None of the four backs above are taller than 5'10 or bigger than 195, but they have shown at least decent ability to get physical yardage in the middle of the field. They're better on the outside, obviously, but if the linebackers have to respect the up-the-middle runs, you can get an extra half-step on them when running to the edge.

Kendial Lawrence was expected to be one of the main contributors in the 2010 running game. On Saturday, he was fourth on the team in production behind Henry Josey, De'Vion Moore and Marcus Murphy.

It's hard to plan how your first four carries could go much better.

Freshman running back Henry Josey at one point had 108 yards on four carries and three touchdowns. He had one carry last week and was the third thing string running back on the Derrick Washington-less Tigers.

Josey ended with seven rushes for 112 yards and three touchdowns.

This game was about what you thought it would be. Blaine Gabbert completed his first 15 passes. Josey took away all of Gabbert's yards so he ended up with 220 yards and one touchdown. Gabbert completed 26-of-31 passes.

Mizzou's big lead led to freshman quarterback James Franklin coming into the game completing 6-of-8 passes. Mizzou was up 43-0 in the third quarter when Gabbert exited and Franklin came in.

Receiver T.J. Moe had double-digit receptions once again with ten for 79 yards.

Mizzou and McNeese State are now just hours from the second game of the college football season

For McNeese State, it figures to be a long day.

Last week against Lamar, McNeese State gave up 426 yards passing and three touchdowns. That's against Lamar. You heard of 'em?

Mizzou, if you haven't heard, isn't too bad passing the ball. They have this guy -- Blaine Gabbert. Heard of him? I think the advantage goes to MU here.

McNeese State also gave up just 20 yards rushing on 16 carries. That's OK because Mizzou won't rely on their running game a whole lot. If you haven't heard, there's been a bit of a running back controversy.

Not that Mizzou fans needed the extra assurance that the Tigers will come out victorious but if last week is any indication then Mizzou's passing game will be rolling.

Mizzou and McNeese State will play in a 6:00 p.m. night game that should resemble the atmosphere surrounding Penn State and Alabama this evening.

OK, that's a lie.

Mizzou is playing a FCS team once again. If history is any indication, Mizzou will win with a score around 44-8. That's the average of the last six games Mizzou has played against FCS opponents -- yeah, they're 6-0.

Dave Matter of the Columbia Tribune addresses this topic this morning and he makes a good point: Why schedule FCS opponents?

You get no reward for beating them. People aren't impressed if you beat them -- you're expected to beat this lower division by 5, 6 sometimes even 7 touchdowns. If you don't annihilate them, then you're Kansas. OK, it's not that bad but you know what I mean.

Mizzou's neighbors to the west have probably given them reason enough not to blow this game. Kansas is a national joke right now after losing to North Dakota State. Mizzou's likely not going to overlook McNeese State after that.

Mizzou DE Aldon Smith showed early in the 2010 season why he's on the watch list for the Bednarik Award.

10 tackles and two sacks against Illinois -- oh and a player of the week award -- is a good reason he's on that list.

Simply put, he's dominating.

If Smith can do that against Illinois, then what can he do against McNeese State?

"This is college football and anybody can beat anybody," said Smith. "We keep that in mind every time we practice and when we will prepare for McNeese this weekend."

That's what he's supposed to say. Realistically, he could do even better. If he's going to be a legitimate candidate on a watch list like the Bednarik Award then he needs to dominate statistically in these early games.

Momentum is going his way and it's the home opener. We'll see what happens 6:00 p.m. Saturday.

The Missouri Tigers will enter week two of the college football season against McNeese State with a few starters missing once again.

Gone from the depth chart are LB Will Ebner and TE Beau Brinkley. Neither played last week after they each had a DWI this offseason.

Starting MLB Luke Lambert won't play with an injury.

Starting FS Jasper Simmons will miss Saturday's game and maybe even the following game as he undergoes surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Jarrell Harrison will take his spot.

RB Kendial Lawrence is expected to play after suffering a bruised shoulder. He'll take it easy in the early goings of practice this week.

Mizzou should be able to take care of business over the next couple weeks even with these injuries.
