After week one against North Dakota State, it was clear the biggest problem for KU was the offense. Three points against a school like that was miserable. The defense, if you watched the game, was not the biggest problem.

Then the next week against Georgia Tech, Jordan Webb lights it up completing throwing for three touchdown passes. It was like it was a whole new player and a whole new offense. They were exciting and they were consistently moving the ball. It was a lot of fun to watch.

...and then there's the Southern Miss game.

I'll give Webb credit for not blowing the game -- he completed 16-of-26 passes with no interceptions. His last touchdown came late in the fourth quarter when Southern Miss lead by 21 points.

Webb's performance was very...eh. It wasn't great by any means but at least he didn't implode, ala KU quarterbacks in week one against NDSU.

After the GT performance, it's clear Webb is the right choice. After Kale Pick's first bad game of the year, he was yanked for Webb.

Let's hope Turner Gill doesn't continue that trend. Webb needs full confidence from his coach and the rest of the team. Quarterback isn't a position that you play magical chairs with.

Webb will get better. He's young. Even with the lack of star-power stats in the Southern Miss game, I like how he didn't implode in this game when KU was down by three scores late. Instead, he hit Johnathan Wilson for a 41-yard touchdown pass.

Well, after the North Dakota State game I thought we could say that we learned the Kansas Jayhawks were an overrated bunch and not a very good football team. After the Georgia Tech game I could say we learned that the Kansas Jayhawks were potentially underrated and at least have the talent to compete with some of the upper-tier in the country.

After the 31-16 loss to Southern Miss? I didn't learn much.

I didn't see this team come back after a big victory and demonstrate the same fire two weeks in a row. I saw special teams mistakes, I saw a team get down early....but I didn't learn much.

Like me, Owen Kemp of Rock Chalk Talk seems to have trouble figuring out what to take away from this game.

Beyond that it's hard to ignore the coaching concerns and disorganization at times during the game, but just a week after praising the group for the win against Georgia Tech it might be wise to just take a step back and breathe before reacting too far one way or the other any time Kansas plays in 2010.

I have a feeling this will be a strange, strange year for KU. Beating GT but losing to NDSU -- that's definitely strange.

It'll be a few weeks before we start to see some real trends developing with this team because right now they're either real high or real low. There's not much consistency.

Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Austin Davis threw for 155 yards on 19- of-24 throws and added 61 yards and a touchdown on the ground while guiding Southern Miss to 31-16 victory over Kansas in a non-conference affair.

Desmond Johnson added 89 yards and a TD on eight carries for the Golden Eagles (2-1), winners of two straight after a 41-13 drubbing at the hands of South Carolina to open the season.

Jordan Webb completed 16-of-26 passes for just 138 yards with a touchdown for the Jayhawks (1-2), who failed to build off last week's upset win over then nationally-ranked Georgia Tech.

Southern Miss's balanced 12-play, 80-yard drive in the first quarter was finished off by running back V.J. Floyd's jump pass to Jonathan Massey from a yard out, giving the hosts a 7-0 lead nine minutes in.

Kansas got on the board via Jacob Branstetter's 37-yard field goal near the 10-minute mark of the second stanza, but Johnson's 49-yard jaunt to paydirt roughly six minutes later made it a 14-3 game.

The Golden Eagles forced a three-and-out, and on the ensuing punt, Tim Green broke through the wedge and blocked the kick. Deron Wilson picked up the bouncing pigskin at the Kansas seven-yard line and went the rest of the way for a comfortable halftime lead.

Deshaun Sands' eight-yard TD run on Kansas' first drive of the second half cut into the deficit, but Davis' plunge over the goal line from the one capped a 15-play, 80-yard march with under two minutes left in the third.

The Golden Eagles' Danny Hrapmann booted a 45-yard kick late with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

Webb and Johnathan Wilson connected for a 41-yard TD on the next play from scrimmage to make the score somewhat respectable.

We'll find out by about 10:00 p.m. Friday evening whether Vegas is right but the Kansas Jayhawks are six point underdogs against Southern Miss.

After two games, we're starting to think that KU football does better as the underdog.

North Dakota State: L

Georgia Tech: W

Simple, right? OK, not so simple. But I do think KU is capable of winning this game. Clearly they've demonstrated that they can hang with good teams and, per the gamblers, Southern Miss is about six points better.

What do you think? Are you taking KU?

The Kansas Jayhawks scored just three points against lowly North Dakota State. That was part of the reason I figured they'd get rolled by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Of course, KU football shocked everyone and took the game from GT.

They did in part because Jordan Webb and the offense was able to move the ball somewhat consistently.

This Friday against Southern Miss, the Jayhawks offense has a good shot at putting together two good weeks in a row.

Owen Kemp of Rock Chalk Talk interviewed Allan Misner of EaglePost.net to get a feel for what Southern Miss is all about. One key part of what they're missing is a consistent defense, Misner tells Kemp.

If you can find a Southern Miss fan that is happy with our defense, he's only pretending to be a Southern Miss fan. We have lost our trademark Nasty Bunch. The players have the strength and skill, but either the system or the execution are significantly off. Right now, most of us are just hoping that the offense can outscore our opponents.

The Jayhawks biggest concern has been the offense (and the quarterback) but after last week there's some renewed confidence in that side of the ball.

It appears as if Southern Miss will provide a great opportunity for KU to put up another good offensive performance. When you're dealing with teams and units that have struggled, momentum and confidence is critical.

We'll see if KU can get the momentum rolling once again this weekend.

Kansas football is operating on a short week playing Southern Miss on Friday night.

Last Saturday against Georgia Tech, freshman running back James Sims showed up in a big way surpassing 100 yards in the Jayhawks upset win over the Yellow Jackets.

Owen Kemp of SB Nation's Rock Chalk Talk reports that the most recent depth chart provided by KU has a new name atop the running backs.

Today, Sims was rewarded. The new Kansas depth chart is out and James Sims has been named the starter at running back. Angus Quigley moves to number two and it would appear that Kansas has found two that they like.
