The World Cup 2022 announcement went to Qatar as the host country for the 2022 tournament. The United States and Australia were two of the other countries that were believed to have a shot. Ultimately, though, the pick went with the odds-on-favorite, which was Qatar.

As we noted in our Where Is Qatar post, the small country is in the middle east, which Grant Wahl of SI.com thinks helped them get the bid.

Qatar, or the State of Qatar, is an Arab country known officially as an emirate in the Middle east. It's in the Qatar Peninsula on the northeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It's bordered by Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf.

That will be the your 2022 World Cup host.

FIFA announced on Thursday that Qatar has won the rights as the host country for the 2022 tournament in front of the United States and Australia.

Voting has concluded and the United States and Australia -- the next closest in the 2022 World Cup odds -- were eliminated. Qatar has been the favorite recently so it's not a major shock that they won. Leading up to the announcement, they were 4/6 favorites while Australia was at 5/2 and the United States at 11/4. The United States odds shot down quickly as the event got closer. They were at 5/2 earlier on Thursday.

Russia will host the 2018 World Cup which means we will have two first-time host sites.

The shocking announcement affirms FIFA President Sepp Blatter's intent to take the world's biggest sporting event to new places. Speaking after the Qatari delegation thanked the executive committee for their support, Blatter spoke of the novelty of having Russia, announced hosts of the 2018 tournament, and Qatar as World Cup sites. Neither have previously hosted the World Cup.

Qatar's proposal was strange to say the least because they are such a small country -- roughly the size of Phoenix, Arizona, as SBNation.com points out. Somehow they became David and beat Goliath for the 2022 World Cup.

After all the work and excitement from the United States, it's all for naught. Congrats to Qatar.

Early speculation on the 2022 World Cup odds had Qatar as the favorite while the United States and Australia weren't far behind. If you bet on Qatar, it appears you may be correct. Unconfirmed reports are surfacing that, indeed, Qatar has won the 2022 World Cup. Via Twitter:

Sky Sports News citing "unconfirmed reports" that Qatar have won

We're not sure where those "unconfirmed reports" started but now it seems many people are picking up on it. The key word here: unconfirmed. It's interesting to see the rumors and reports come flowing in all at once. To me, that's almost as interesting as the announcement itself. The latest odds, released shortly before the voting, moved the United States to an 11/4 favorite while Qatar was at 4/6 and Australia at 5/2.

The World Cup 2022 announcement, in which the United States is in the running, was expected at 9:00 a.m. (central) on Thursday but it appears that may be delayed. BBC reporter James Pearce reports that the voting, and thus the announcement, has been delayed.

A source at FIFA has just told me that the voting is still going on. The announcement is likely to be later than scheduled

If it's a simple majority for one country then voting wouldn't take this long. Pearce's report suggests that this voting is indeed close. The 2022 World Cup could go into four rounds of voting to find the winner. Judging by the delay in the announcement, it sounds like they've gone past round one.

The United States, Qatar and Australia are considered the three front-runners at this point.

As I type this, we're waiting to hear the World Cup announcement on the host country for 2022. The United States, Qatar and Australia are considered the three front-runners at this point. As I type, voting is going down. So how does the voting work? SBNation.com explains:

For both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, each Executive Committee member will vote for one of the proposals. Twelve votes are required for a proposal to win. If a round of voting passes without a proposal getting that majority, the least supported bid will be eliminated and another round of voting commences. If the final round of voting ends in a tie, FIFA President Sepp Blatter will cast the deciding vote.

It's 23 voters now because one had to be removed. But the point is 12 votes is what you're looking for.

The Unites States and Australia have 5/2 odds on winning while Qatar (and the heat) stand at 4/6. Of course, we're not sure how much that really means since they haven't even completed the voting process.

World Cup host country announcements for 2018 and 2022 are expected to be made on Thursday morning and the United States is one of five potential areas that the World Cup be hosted. USA is going after the 2022 games and are expected to have a strong chance after a solid presentation from the U.S. bid committee earlier this week. Morgan Freeman, Bill Clinton and even a video of President Barack Obama were involved in the presentation on Wednesday.

Freeman's emphasis on diversity would continue throughout the presentation as President Obama spoke on tape and United States Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati spoke, as well as during Landon Donovan's appearance. Most of all, the theme of diversity and the impact that a United States hosted World Cup could have on the world was hammered home by Clinton, who was also not shy about reminding voters about the time he spent with them at this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

While the USA may be considered to have a strong chance, here's what the bettors are saying about their chances at this point. World Cup odds for 2022:

Latest Odds

4/6 - Qatar

5/2 - United States

5/2 - Australia

33/1 - Japan

40/1 - South Korea

How they come up with these odds? We have no idea but they're real.
