Well it looks like Lance Zawadzki will be hanging around the Kansas City Royals a little longer than expected. After clearing waivers, Zawadzki has been optioned to the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA affiliate of the Royals). Joaquin Arias will also be joining Lance in Omaha after being designated for free agency earlier in the week.

After the acquisition of shortstop Alcides Escobar playing time was going to prove tough especially at shortstop for Kansas City. However, with Zawadzki and Arias both having major league experience, they will be solid additions to the Omaha team next spring. They also will provide good middle infield depth for the Royals organization and there is still a good chance we will see both players with the big league club sometime during 2011.

The Kansas City Royals have made another roster move today, designating newly acquired infielder Lance Zawadzki for assignment to make room for another new addition, Melky Cabrera. Zawadzki, a 25-year-old middle infielder, had been claimed by the Royals off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Nov. 5. He appeared in 20 games last season for the Padres, playing all three spots on the left side of the infield. Cutting ties with Zawadzki means the Royals have decided to keep Joaquin Arias on the 40-man roster for the time being.

Melky Cabrera, a 26-year-old outfielder, had been signed by the Royals on Dec. 10 as a free agent from the Atlanta Braves. He is a six-year major league veteran having played in parts of five seasons with the New York Yankees, and played in the 2009 World Series with the Yanks. Cabrera is signed to a 1-year contract for $1.25 million and is the leading candidate for the Royals' centerfield spot.
