Kansas State Wildcats head coach Frank Martin is acting like a guy who has lost three players on his team since last summer and on the verge of losing another one.

In other words, a little wacky.

This week the Kansas City Star and Topeka Capital Journal reported this week that senior Curtis Kelly was under investigation for violating some sort of department policy. The Star connected the dots and suggested it was the drug and alcohol policy.

When Martin was asked about it on Thursday, he confirmed Kelly would be playing on Saturday against Colorado. He also had a few extra words for the reporters in attendance when asked again about Kelly's status, according to the Associated Press report from the media session.

"Ask your source. Whoever reported it, ask their source. Don't ask me. If you ask me a question, I answer your question. For four years I've answered every question. I was asked two minutes ago if Curt was at practice. What did I answer? Then I was asked is he playing Saturday. What'd I answer? Yes. Right? So I thought I dealt with it. Now go ask the source that reported to you fine people whatever they said."

And more from the Topeka Capital-Journal:

"You guys are funny," Martin said. "You created the attention and you think that's affecting him or me? Absolutely not. He's been great in practice. Absolutely not. Does that mean he's going to play great? No. But you guys created the attention. Go back to your source. Ask your source what he thinks or she thinks about how the attention is affecting him."

Going by Martin's words, I have a few thoughts. Martin seems incapable of handling legitimate questions about one of his players that may or may not be in trouble. If Kelly weren't being investigated by the school for a possible violation of department policy, wouldn't Martin have made that very clear? Instead, according to published reports, he did not confirm nor deny those reports. He turned the attention back onto the reporters, instead of the (legitimate) questions, which, in my mind, is a classic way of avoiding a question you don't want to answer.

After hearing what Martin had to say. I feel more confident that something is going on with Kelly. By reacting the way he did, Kelly's coach did him no favors.

By now you know Kansas State Wildcats forward Curtis Kelly is under investigation by the school for some sort of violation of department policy. K-State, citing privacy issues, aren't talking about the alleged violation. So no reports have anyone on the record but Kellis Robinett of the Kansas City Star goes through the student-athlete handbook and finds one violation that fits.

But a source indicated Kelly is a repeat offender of the condition in question and that it has cost him playing time already this season.

According to K-State's student-athlete handbook, only one violation would fit those parameters - a violation of the student-athlete drug and alcohol policy.

Austin Meek of the Topeka Capital Journal reported (I think he was first, but could be wrong) that the investigation could result in Kelly's dismissal from the team. As Robinett points out, that would suggest three violations of the student-athlete drug and alcohol policy.

A first violation and the student-athlete must tell their parents with the coach present and undergo counseling. We have no idea if this happened or not.

A second violation results in a suspension for 10 percent (three games) of the season. This is where it starts to match up. Kelly didn't play for three games early in the season and we never really figured out why. Head coach Frank Martin said he didn't like Kelly's practice habits but never expounded on it.

A third violation results in dismissal from the team and loss of financial aid. That's what reportedly may be happening now. Check out Robinett's report for more details on the situation.

Kelly has reportedly appealed the decision and if the appeal doesn't work, he'd become the third player to leave the Kansas State program this season.

Kansas State Wildcats forward Curtis Kelly may be in trouble again.

We think.

Though details are slim, school officials are believed to be investigating a potential violation of department policy by Kelly, according to Austin Meek of the Topeka Capital-Journal. The school isn't saying anything citing confidential student-athlete records.

But what kind of violation is it?

The Topeka Capital-Journal has learned the potential violation could result in Kelly's permanent suspension from the team and loss of financial aid, though Kelly has filed an appeal to retain his playing status.

The situation is not believed to involve NCAA rules violations, and no definitive time frame exists for the appeals process. Kelly's availability during the appeal will be determined internally.

We'll see how it turns out but it's definitely not good news for Kansas State. If Kelly were to leave, he would become the third player to leave the program this season along with Freddy Aspirilla and Wally Judge. K-State started the season in the top five and things have not been anything like a top five team as they've stumbled out to a 16-8 record.

Kelly was benched early in the season with head coach Frank Martin saying he was unhappy with his practice habits and Kelly was later suspended six games for accepting impermissible benefits from a department store.
