The SEC is the opposite of the Big 12 in 2011. On one side, the SEC features the most elite teams in the country while it also has several teams that couldn't beat their way out of Conference USA. The Big 12, on the other hand, fails to have any dominant teams that can run the table. Thus, the Big 12 has played its way out of the top of the college football rankings while the SEC holds the top three spots. Yep, the top three.

LSU, Alabama and Arkansas hold the top three spots in this week's AP Top 25 and it's not surprising considering just how dominant each team has looked to this point. It's clear that the teams hold respect with the national media while other one-loss teams are left wondering why they are overlooked. At the very least, Oklahoma State is still treading water near the top for the Big 12's sake.

In the biggest display of the lack of respect for the Big 12 this week, the USA Today/Coaches poll is completely ignoring the Oklahoma State Cowboys -- the best team in the Big 12 -- in their top five for the sake of other one-loss teams like Virginia Tech and Stanford. It's a slight snub that's baffling given that at least the AP Poll and others have OSU in the top five. Perhaps that move from five to six isn't a big deal in the greater scheme, but it's still a snub that should not happen.

As expected, the SEC dominates the top with LSU, Alabama and then Arkansas rounding out the top three.

Oklahoma State picked a good week to lose. Of course, it’s definitely not what Brandon Weeden, Justin Blackmon and company were hoping for in their game against the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night. But even though they suffered a loss after two overtime sessions, everyone else clearly received the same memo among the top teams in the country. The Oregon Ducks lost. So did the Oklahoma Sooners. Boise State got the info a week early. In other words, few teams have looked that great in the last few weeks.

That’s what has allowed the Cowboys to stay strong in the rankings despite their loss. They are still No. 5 in the most recent Associated Press release of rankings and that keeps them in the hunt for a major BCS bowl as well as slim hopes for a national championship appearance. If Arkansas can upend LSU and Auburn can beat Alabama this week, then anything is certainly possible.

The Kansas State Wildcats are 9-2. They have second place in the Big 12 all to themselves. They’re on the verge of a 10-win season under Bill Snyder and have an emerging star at quarterback in Collin Klein. Yet the Wildcats aren’t even a Top 15 team in the Associated Press Top 25, released today. That should be enough to motivate Bill Snyder’s team this weekend to finish the great thing they’ve started and take out the upstart Iowa State Cyclones.

The Big 12 overall has taken its lumps in this week’s rankings. Oklahoma State fell to No. 5 overall and the Oklahoma Sooners are now at No. 12 after their loss to Baylor. It’s a down year for the conference, but the Wildcats are a good story. Unfortunately, no one is interested in it.

This much is clear: the SEC is king. Everyone else can step aside and make way for the royalty known as the Southeastern Conference because the top three teams in the land — LSU, Alabama and Arkansas — are all from the SEC on every ranking system known to mankind here in week 12. Everyone else is left hoping for some scrap of respect after these three teams are finished.

That’s what makes this week’s match-up between the Tigers of LSU and the Razorbacks of Arkansas so compelling. One of these teams will have to fall and it’s likely the LSU-Alabama game from earlier this year, otherwise known as Kickfest 2011, will be repeated for the national championship. Maybe not, but it’s hard to argue against the SEC at this point.

The Kansas State Wildcats won yet another game on Sunday, raising their season total to 9 in a year that no one expected anything close to this performance (at least outside of Bill Snyder’s staff). That said, it’s still somewhat surprising that the national media or at least college football voters are still not respecting the job that Snyder and company have done this year in making Collin Klein into a nationally known product and the Wildcats into a possible Big 12 favorite. This week they are still in the middle of the pack despite a win over the Texas Longhorns on Saturday at No. 15 in the USA Today/Coaches Top 25.

The Wildcats are currently at 9-2 on the season and close things out against a suddenly and surprisingly upstart Iowa State team who upset Oklahoma State on Friday night. It will be a challenge, but Snyder’s team still should be favored against the Cyclones and that would give the Wildcats a 10-win season — something that should finally give voters the confidence they need to make K-State a top 10 team nationally.

The predictable response is to see LSU and Alabama at the very top of any poll here in Week 12 of the college football season. But a quick glance past those familiar names and it’s clear that the voters on a national scale have no love for the Big 12 this season. Of course, it’s the conference’s own fault.

Arkansas and Virginia Tech and Stanford sit in the next three slots of the USA Today/Coaches Poll this week, meaning that there are no Big 12 teams represented for the first time since the Oklahoma Land Rush. The Cowboys of Oklahoma State sit at No. 6, right ahead of undefeated Houston, and the Sooners aren’t even in the top 10 after their upset loss to Baylor. In other words, one team in the Top Ten and none in the Top Five.

The USA Today/Coaches Poll has been officially released and it’s clear that the LSU-Alabama flavor atop most projections and polls so far is going to continue throughout everything released this weekend. That sets the stage for the top two SEC powers to also represent the entire nation in the Allstate College Football National Championship Game.

Coming in after those SEC teams are, well, more SEC teams. Well, just one, but it’s amazing to see just how much national voters lose the SEC, giving Arkansas the No. 3 placement in the country. Virginia Tech and Stanford round out the top five, meaning that the Big 12 has no teams in the top five — a feat that no one saw coming before the season began.
