There’s a bit of good news coming out of the Minnesota Vikings camp today with the announcement through ESPN’s Adam Schefter that there’s no broken bones in Adrian Peterson’s ankle or foot. Via Twitter, Schefter instead says that it’s an ankle sprain according to head coach Leslie Frazier. Still, an MRI is scheduled for tomorrow, so the team will likely give a further update after the results are back from that.

For now, the team is going to have to rely on Toby Gerhart, and that’s not a good thing. Gerhart had 7 carries for 18 yards in the 27-21 loss to the Oakland Raiders. The best running came from Christian Ponder, the rookie quarterback, who had an impressive 71 yards on five carries. Percy Harvin also adds a rushing dimension to his game and had five carries for 21 yards. Each outperformed Gerhart and it’s clear the Vikings knew they were limited offensively with only Gerhart back there.

That’s still good news in the long run because a sprain will naturally heal with rest and Peterson might not be out that long. If it’s a high ankle sprain, that can cost several weeks on end, but depending on the severity, it’s possible that Peterson is back in just a couple of weeks.

The good news for Minnesota Vikings fans (and fantasy football players) is that Adrian Peterson’s injured ankle is apparently not broken according to Jeremy Fowler of the Pioneer Press. Instead, Fowler reports via Twitter, ’Heard from someone close to Peterson that an X-ray showed no break in his ankle, a matter of severity of sprain at this point."

Certainly Toby Gerhart will continue to take most of the carries for today and the injury is still likely to carry over for at least another week or more. Ankle sprains, after all, are injuries that can linger for some time and it was clear today that the Vikings running back was really hurting early in today’s game against the Oakland Raiders. But it’s good news for the long-term prognosis for Peterson that the NFL’s best running back could actually be back sooner than maybe some believed at first.

The team will likely address the issue further after the game and throughout this week. As for fantasy football value, bench Peterson and try to grab Gerhart on the waiver wire until further notice.

The Minnesota Vikings have already fallen behind to the Oakland Raiders 9-7. Now the worst news comes from NFL reporter Jason LaCanfora that star running back Adrian Peterson has been lost for the rest of a game with an ankle injury that happened in the first quarter. He was helped off of the field earlier and was sitting on a cart. Now it’s clear that Toby Gerhart and Lorenzo Booker are going to have to man the offensive backfield in his absence.

For both the Vikings and fantasy football owners, this situation is the worst one possible. The Vikings are limited offensively already a rookie quarterback in Christian Ponder, who has already thrown one interception today. Peterson ended the game with 6 rushes for 26 yards. It remains to be seen what offensive wrinkles the Vikings can bring but Percy Harvin is going to have to be more valuable than ever. Thus far, Harvin has already received three receptions and three rushes, so he’s going to have a career game if they’re to beat the Raiders.

Something is wrong with the Vikings offense. Of course, that was true before today's Minnesota game began, but now the team has major issues with Adrian Peterson -- perhaps the best running back in the entire National Football League -- had to be helped off of the field with what Charlie Casserly is calling an ankle injury. Of course, it's much too soon to tell anything official, but the Vikings now become a one-dimensional offense without Peterson in the game and with a rookie quarterback at the helm in Christian Ponder.
↵
Peterson currently leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 10 and is on his way to yet another Pro Bowl season with 180 carries for 846 yards on the season. Even in an offense that's limited like the Vikes, Peterson is still earning a very impressive 4.7 yards per carry, his best total in three NFL seasons.
↵
With Peterson being carted off the field, the Vikings must turn to Toby Gerhart and Lorenzo Booker. We will keep you posted on Peterson's injury.
