Gary Pinkel was arrested. Their top player was gone for the year. The tough schedule proved to be exactly that.

The Missouri Tigers have endured a frustrating season in 2011, but they’re finally beginning to climb out of the ditch that many had placed them in when they reached a record of 4-5 just a few weeks ago. Now they stand at 7-5 on a three game winning streak and are hoping to close out with a bowl win to have an eight game season and reason for hope that James Franklin and Henry Josey can lead them forward as a dynamic running offense.

Given the record and the strength of schedule, Missouri has now entered the top 25 BCS rankings announced tonight on ESPN. It’s a sign that the Mizzou Tigers weren’t as bad this year as some might think and it bodes well for the future.

The table is already set and the drinks are already poured for the predicted party of two ready to dine at the Allstate National Championship table on January 9. The reservation reads LSU and Alabama and unless something significant takes place between now and then, the two will enjoy the chance to feast for a ring. But Oklahoma State is the lone team who can cancel the reservation and they hope to do just since they’re ranked No. 3 in the BCS Rankings and hope to go even higher next weekend.

OSU has a date coming up with the Oklahoma Sooners that will give a lot of credibility to the Cowboys if they can walk away with a win. They have blown through the Big 12 this season in a year where potentially 9 teams can be bowl eligible from the conference. In other words, they’re a great team with a killer schedule. The drama will unfold next week at this time.

The latest 2011 Bowl projections still have Kansas State slated to take part in the Alamo Bowl against a Pac-12 opponent this Bowl season. Thanks to upsets, it looks like the Big 12 will only be getting one team in a BCS bowl with Oklahoma State still likely to earn a nod to the Fiesta Bowl.

The Cowboys still have their annual rivalry game with Oklahoma left but ESPN Big 12 writer David Ubben still doesn't like a two loss Kansas State's chances for a BCS game over a three loss Oklahoma team.

Also, I think a three-loss Oklahoma team is still more attractive than two-loss Kansas State, which took a beating from the Sooners in Manhattan.

Should Oklahoma upset Oklahoma State, then a two loss Cowboys team still has a good shot at a BCS Bowl but that wouldn't be a certainty for a team that lost two of its last three games.

Back when LSU and Alabama first faced each other back in October, the word on the game was that it was the real national championship. Well, the apt description turned out to be a prophetic statement with the latest BCS Rankings proving that to be true. LSU and Alabama are both the top two teams in the latest standings, meaning that if the season ended today, these two SEC powers would play for all the marbles. While Oklahoma State remains a possibility to spoil the party, it seems a fairly safe bet that the two teams will be able to enjoy a rematch on January 9

The Missouri Tigers have had a season to forget. Expectations are always high for the Tigers given Gary Pinkel’s success over the last several years, so when the Tigers fell to 4-5, it was a low point for a team struggling to put teams away after watching several impact players leave for the NFL or to graduation. However, it only got worse from there.

Henry Josey, the team’s leading rusher and the top rusher in the Big 12, went down for the season. Soon thereafter, Pinkel was arrested for a DWI that ended up getting him suspended for one game. Yet through it all, the team has ended their season on a nice winning streak and a bowl win would bring them to 8-5 overall.

The title game is already set in the minds of most people, and only one team really has the chance of breaking up the party. LSU and Alabama are widely assumed to be the top two teams awaiting the ultimate ball — a party for the national championship that will go down on January 9. Instead, Oklahoma State hopes to be the team that pushes Alabama out of the way for a chance of their own instead of another SEC rematch.

The latest round of BCS Rankings only confirm what the polls were already telling everyone — that if the season ended today, then the match-up for the Allstate National Championship game on January 9th for the best team in college football would be between Les Miles’ LSU Tigers and Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide.

The LSU Tigers have definitely earned a place there with their win over Arkansas this weekend and Alabama defeated Auburn to stay atop other teams with only one loss. Perhaps they could lose that spot given Oklahoma State, who is at No. 3, has a date next week with the Oklahoma Sooners that certainly will play a major part of their computer rankings.
