For one half, the South Florida Bulls kept their dream alive. Unfortunately, the second half kicked in and, with it, the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team. The No. 14 ranked Jayhawks completely overwhelmed the Bulls in the second half of today’s contest to walk away with a 70-42 win.

Tyshawn Taylor led all scorers with 24 points, including an impressive 8 of 10 shooting from the floor. He went 4 of 6 from three-point range, but he continued to struggle with turnovers with another 5 in a week that Bill Self called out his guard’s sloppy play. As a team, KU had 14 turnovers.

Thomas Robinson had his consecutive games streak with a double-double stopped at 6, but he did contribute 14 points and 8 rebounds to go with 4 steals and 2 blocks. Connor Teahan had 11 points and 4 assists off the bench for KU. Augustus Gilchrist was the high scorer for the Bulls with 11.

With the win, the Jayhawks move to 5-2 on the season. The Bulls fall to 5-4.

The South Florida Bulls are 5-3 and hoping for a miracle, according to Ken DeCelles of Voodoo Five, SB Nation’s South Florida blog. While the Bulls have a winning record, even South Florida fans have to concede that the talent differential between the two teams should be too much to handle. After all, KU just beat Florida Atlantic by more than 20 on an off night.

DeCelles writes, “Its going to be hard for USF to pull off the upset. If there is one thing that has me optimistic, is how quickly the Kansas bigs get into foul trouble. All of their posts average 3 fouls a game, and Withey and Wesley each almost give up four fouls a game. Even with that in mind, I just don’t think USF is going to pull it out.”

The Jayhawks are currently 4-2 and ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press Top 25. Their lone losses are to Duke and Kentucky.

Expectations are always high for Kansas basketball, a program that has won seven consecutive Big 12 regular season titles.

So even though the team is off to a solid 5-2 start, with their only losses coming in tight games against top 10 foes, Jayhawks coach Bill Self isn't happy, especially with his inconsistent back-court:

"Now, I don’t know if I can say that totally," Self said, "because we’re good turning it over both inland and in Hawaii. I’ll give you a stat, because I figured it out … I’m not really happy with our guard play.

"Since Towson, when we had 30 assists and five turnovers, our starting point guard (Tyshawn Taylor) has 16 assists and 21 turnovers, our starting two-guard (Elijah Johnson) has 14 assists and 15 turnovers, and our starting three-guard (Travis Releford) has seven assists and 10 turnovers. That tells you, right now, that’s probably the poorest ball-handling backcourt of anyone in the country when you talk about assist-to-turnover ratio."

With three of Kansas' top guards -- Tyrel Reed, Brady Morningstar and Josh Selby -- departing from last season, Self has been forced to hand over the reigns of the team over to Taylor and Johnson, two talented but inconsistent upperclassmen.

Thomas Robinson, while a dominant force on the backboards, isn't nearly as skilled as the Morris twins at creating his own shot, so he needs the Jayhawks guards to get him the ball in the correct spots.

And with a Dec. 10 home date against No. 2 Ohio State looming, Kansas' guards don't have much time to live up to Self's expectations.

The Jayhawks will try to protect their home court against a middle-of-the-pack Big East team.

The No. 14 Kansas Jayhawks host the 5-3 South Florida Bulls on Saturday, looking to generate some momentum before their third contest against a top 5 opponent this year, a Dec. 10 home game against No. 2 Ohio State.

Kansas rebounded nicely from a heart-breaking loss to No. 6 Duke in Maui, beating Florida Atlantic by 23 points on Wednesday.

Star forward Thomas Robinson had 19 points and 17 rebounds while Tyshawn Taylor and Travis Releford chipped in with 29 points from the perimeter.

Under fifth-year head coach Stan Heath, South Florida returns their top eight players from last season's 10-23 squad. The Bulls have already won five games this season, but they've dropped their three biggest contests so far: a road game at VCU and home dates verse Penn State and Old Dominion.

A balanced team whose top five scorers average between 8 and 13 points a game, South Florida is led by Arizona State transfer Victor Rudd, a 6'7 210 junior forward averaging 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game.

The Jayhawks, meanwhile, will try to get starting guard Elijah Johnson on track, after Johnson suffered through what coach Bill Self dubbed a "Maui hangover" against Florida Atlantic, committing 7 turnovers without scoring in 27 minutes.

The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2 at 4:15 PM.
