The Denver Broncos gave permission for other teams to interview their coordinators on both sides of the football, but they might get both of them back in a move that would maintain needed continuity for the young team as they come back for John Fox's second year with the Broncos.

Mike McCoy and Dennis Allen were both drawing interest from other teams for their head coaching openings, and the Raiders and Dolphins were particularly interested in McCoy, the team's offensive coordinator. His work with the running game and Tim Tebow showed his ability to make adjustments during the course of a long NFL season. Yet the Dolphins moved on with the announcement of Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as the team's new head coach.

That leaves the Raiders as the only team left connected to McCoy and that comes after McCoy backed out of the process with the team in hopes of landing in Miami. Thus the OC might have shot himself in the foot if he truly wanted a chance to coach in the Bay Area.

If anything else, he will be back in Denver next season and can do this all over again one year from now. If he continues to mold Tebow into a successful NFL quarterback, he might have his choice of NFL openings.

The Denver Broncos might soon say goodbye to the man behind the team's offensive coordinator soon enough with the word that Mike McCoy is among the final two for the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins. McCoy's work with Tim Tebow and the Broncos running game was apparently enough to impress several teams as he interviewed for the Raiders head coaching job as well. However, Miami is the preferred destination.

Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is also a candidate and the only person standing in his way. Todd Bowles, the team's interim head coach after Tony Sparano was fired, is the third candidate among the finalists.

"McCoy entered Thursday with the belief that he was the front-runner," writes Barry Jackson, "to the point that he removed his name from consideration for the Oakland Raiders head coaching job, according to a source. McCoy has met with the Dolphins twice this week. Conversely, Philbin went ahead with his Thursday interview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching job.

"But there were indications Thursday that it remained a tight race between the two offensive coordinators, with Bowles a fallback option if Ross cannot decide between Philbin and McCoy. The Dolphins were impressed by McCoy, and he reportedly has the support of Ireland, whose opinions carry significant weight with Ross. But Ross also thinks very highly of Philbin, according to associates."

A decision could come as soon as this weekend.
