As he checked in from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Romeo Crennel is all smiles. As the Chiefs new head coach, he has a reason to be glad for a second chance at a head coaching gig at the highest level. However, he also says the Chiefs are all excited for what is ahead in 2012 with the momentum the team experienced late in 2011 with wins against the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers in the last three contests of the season.

In speaking with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Crennel said those wins will help establish the tone for next season.

"That was a great feeling," Crennel said. "A change had been made on our staff. Coach Haley was released and I was named interim, and getting the guys to perform and play with the energy and effort they played with and the game plan allowed us to beat Green Bay. That gave the players on the team a lot of hope for the season.

"Then we were able to play Oakland and even though we lost, we came close. Then we beat Denver in the last game of the year. I think all of our players left with good taste in their mouths and they're looking forward to next year and seeing what we can get done."

Crennel also said his own experience of the past will help him in the present as he takes his fours season as the Browns head coach into this tenure with the Chiefs.

"Just the experience itself and having to deal with the scope of the organization and everything [was helpful]," Crennel said. "You're responsible for everybody and everything. Having gone through that this time around, I can anticipate things and when things do come up that you cannot anticipate, I am better able to handle those. Then I think that hopefully that will help me win both games."

If Peyton Manning is looking around for familiar names and faces for his next home, the Kansas City Chiefs have one for him to consider. According to Mike Florio, the arrival of Jim Bob Cooter, the Chiefs’ new offensive quality control coach, comes at an interesting time given his relationship with Peyton Manning.

Florio writes, "With the status of Peyton Manning undecided in Indy and most teams not currently having a quarterback who plays as well as Peyton when healthy, the arrival of employees with connections to Peyton Manning at a new team will trigger natural speculation as to whether that team hopes to lure Peyton to town. Case in point: The Chiefs have hired former Colts assistant offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

If and when Manning is released, it will be a frenzy to see who signs him. That said, Cooter is only one of several coaches out there with ties. Jim Caldwell, for example, was Peyton’s former head coach and is now with the Baltimore Ravens. It’s just as easy to say something is at work there.

If Manning is coming to Kansas City, it will have much more to do with the talent around him at the skill positions and the Chiefs solid chance of winning the AFC West than it will the addition of a new quality control coach.

After taking its time to announce Brian Daboll as the team’s offensive coordinator position, the rest of the dominoes of the Kansas City Chiefs’ coaching staff has quickly fallen into place. That’s good news because the coaching staff will have vital input into the roster and who the Chiefs front office will try to acquire for various schemes. The latest roster coaching additions include an import from the Super Bowl champs, a tie to Peyton Manning and the Rams complete special teams unit. From the official press release:

Brian Daboll, the Kansas City Chiefs new offensive coordinator, used the word "attack" when asked to describe how he would run the team's offense in the 2012 season.

From Arrowhead Pride:

"The first word I would like to use is attack," Daboll said. "When you're an offensive football coach, you really want to set precedent on a defense and attack a defense. That changes week to week based on things you may get but you have a set package as an offensive system where there's a thousand plays but you pick and choose on a weekly deal what you're getting defensively.

"I think it's important to be balanced to help the quarterback out in the run and the pass. Utilize different personnel groups, different formations. Sometimes we'll move in shifts, sometimes we'll be stationary. I think you have to have the ability to have an up tempo scheme where you have a no-huddle package. Threatening runs, passes and all those different things, you have to keep the defense as off balance as you can."

Daboll was the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2011 and the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and 2010. In the three seasons of experience as an offensive coordinator, his offenses have averaged a regular-season ranking of 27. He has the tools necessary in Kansas City to have a successful offense, we saw that in 2010 when the Chiefs had the 12-ranked offense in the league and went to the playoffs as a AFC West champions.

Romeo Crennel, the Kansas City Chiefs’ new head coach, recently spoke out in a conference call about the Chiefs’ new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and believes that Chiefs Nation is going to enjoy their new offensive look — but he also realizes that some games have to be won to get everyone on the same page.

There has, after all, been a bit of negative feedback about the hire for a number of reasons. Daboll is not the sexy hire that some were wanting. He’s also another former name to come from the Patriots tree, and that tie would be exciting if the ties that have already come into Kansas City had resulted in establishing the team as a winner. Finally, Daboll’s last two offenses have been in Cleveland and Miami, and the Browns and Dolphins have not exactly been a hotbed of offensive activity in recent seasons.

Still, Crennel says that Daboll is going to win fans over as soon as the team starts to play.

“He’ll do a good job for the Chiefs and that’s why I hired Brian as we went through the process. I’m excited about him. I know that he’ll do a good job for us and when we win games, I think everybody will be excited about it.”

Crennel also said that Daboll’s offense might look a bit like Miami’s last season, but it will mostly be about preparing for the next opponent and scouting what the team can do best against them. The plan, then, is to keep the Chiefs offense solid in all areas.

“What we talked about and I know that when we worked together is that we always try to game plan for the opponent,” said Crennel in a conference call. " I think having balance in the offense as far as the running game and passing game goes and I think that’s what you can see. I think this league as we look at the NFL, if you have a quarterback that can perform, that helps you.

“So he understands about the quarterback position. He understands about the complementary positions that come with it, so you can see a little bit of everything. I think the offense could be all encompassing. You can see two tight ends. You can see two backs. You can see one back.”

You'll have to consider me one of the guilty parties when new Kansas City Chiefs' offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was rumored to be next in line for the position that was less than impressed. Sure, it's hard right off the bat to be excited about someone that statistically speaking, hasn't seen a lot of success with his offenses in Cleveland and Miami. But then you're right into the "how much talent did he really have?" discussions with those specific teams in comparison to what he'll have in Kansas City. But Daboll has one thing going for him that hasn't been mentioned often in Chiefs' fans circles since the annoucement of his hiring.

Fans wanted to see the "flashy" hire, something they could get behind and generate some exictement around. The Chiefs had that a couple of years ago with Charlie Weis and that didn't end the way that fans had hoped. Sure, he made Matt Cassel look like a Pro Bowl quarterback for a season against weak defenses but it still didn't bring Kansas City a Super Bowl. And isn't that what all teams are striving for when they make moves? They're looking for that offensive coordinator that can bring them a Super Bowl victory and same for the defensive coordinator and so on...

You have two completely different levels of "sexy" on the hiring scale between Brian Daboll and Charlie Weis. The bottom line if that we already know that the sexy hire didn't work. You can blame Todd Haley, Scott Pioli, Weis himself or a million other factors/people but the bottom line is it didn't work with Weis in Kansas City. There are a lot of fans right now that do not believe that Brian Daboll is going to make the Chiefs a better football team. And a lot of those people have spent exactly the same amount of time around the Chiefs players, coaches, and any other NFL-related franchise as the people that believe he's going to be a great coach. As fans we just don't know.

When Scott Pioli took over the Kansas City Chiefs a few years ago a lot of fans were optimistically trusting what decisions he was making because he had seen success before and fans were giving him the benefit of the doubt. But a few years later some of those decisions have backfired on him so you're starting to see less "benefit of the doubt" and more "show me" in regards to the majority of fans' take on these kinds of decisions. But before fans use this as an example of something that doesn't work let's let them play a game----or 16+ before we tag it as another failed decision. Consider me on the 'show me' train at this point but as I thought about all the hires that would not have felt so underwhelming, it didn't take long for me to try and think back about hires that didn't underwhelm, but their results did. Daboll may not have Weis' resume, or anything close to it, but he's got an opportunity and that's how it starts.

Daboll, meanwhile, expressed excitement about joining a Kansas City team with a lot of offensive talent looking to rebound from last year's 7-9 disappointment:

"This is a great opportunity," Daboll said. "After meeting with Romeo, it was clear to me Kansas City was a good fit. I have a lot of respect for Romeo and a strong appreciation for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Romeo and I have similar ideas on the direction of the program and we have a good core group of players to get started with. I’m ready to get in as soon as possible and start working to be a part of something special."

The Kansas City Chiefs have named their choice as the team's new offensive coordinator and Brian Daboll has won the role.
