It's tough when a head coach leaves any program after considerable time and success. It's especially difficult for the seniors who hoped to complete their playing careers under the same man who recruited and developed them. But Rodney McGruder will not enjoy his senior year under Frank Martin since the Kansas State basketball coach left for South Carolina.

While McGruder admits his frustration when the news came earlier this spring, he did say that leaving was never a possibility for him.

"I was upset," said McGruder. "Frank was a great coach, great guy. He cared for us. It hurts to see someone you care for leave. (But) I bleed purple too much now. I love the fans and appreciate everything they do. No matter what would have happened, I would have stuck around, I believe."

As for their final words, McGruder said that Martin did contact him personally before he left.

"He reached out to me," said McGruder. "He told me he wishes the best for me and if I ever need him, he's there for me. I just told him I really appreciate that and I wished him the best of luck for the rest of his career."

Bruce Weber now has the task of handling McGruder's senior season.

Bruce Weber's transition in Manhattan has hit a few bumps, most notably the dismissal of troubled forward James Watson, who Weber informed last week won't be returning to the Wildcats. Watson, a transfer from Washington State with a rough upbringing (although without legal run-ins), also suffers a heart condition that causes him to faint at times. Watson also suffered an elbow injury that reduced his 2011-'12 playing time to one game and no points.

Watson told the Wichita Eagle that he'd done everything he was asked to and had been operating with the belief he'd be a member of the team next season:

"I was so shocked," Watson said in a phone interview. "I didn’t want to hear what they were telling me. I thought April Fool’s was back I was so shocked. I don’t know why the new coach kicked me off the team. I think it’s really messed up. I could have helped the team next year.

The other reason is that Weber is opening scholarship room for Chicago area point guard Michael Orris, whom Weber had recruited to Illinois before he was fired there. Watson contends that he's been medically cleared to play basketball, and that he'll likely stay at Kansas State long enough to earn his degree.

"I feel like he was just trying to open up a scholarship and wanted me off the team," Watson said. "I feel 100-percent healthy. I only fainted once during my time here, and that was with the old coaching staff. It never happened when Bruce Weber was around. I worked to come back from my injury … It’s crazy.

James Watson, a junior with the Kansas St. Wildcats men's basketball team, has seen just three minutes of game time in the past two seasons. Now his time with the team appears to be over.

According to Kellis Robinett of the Wichita Eagle, Watson was informed on Friday that new head coach Bruce Weber would not be retaining the player for the upcoming season.

According to Watson's mother, Annette, the decision was based on health concerns. She said Watson has a heart defect that causes him to faint. He began suffering from the problem at Washington State and experienced a scary moment last season when he fainted in his Manhattan apartment and missed a practice.

Because of that health concern, and other injuries, Watson played sparingly during his first season with the Wildcats. The 6-foot-8 junior forward saw time in one game and was held scoreless. He was hoping to contribute as a senior, and was practicing well with Weber in offseason workouts, but that is no longer a possibility.

Watson plans to stay at Kansas State and will pursue a medical hardship that will allow him to retain his scholarship status.

Andy Katz has his latest analysis on the NCAA coaching scene and the changes that have affected so many schools. Locally a number of coaches have changed schools, but nothing has been as surprising as Frank Martin’s exit from Kansas State. It’s a move that Katz says is a major boon for South Carolina in particular. He writes:

Horn wasn’t able to work his Sweet 16 magic from Western Kentucky at South Carolina. The Gamecocks slipped significantly in 2011-12, going 2-14 in the SEC, 10-21 overall. South Carolina needed to make a major splash. And it did. Martin is a coaching star. He gets his players to sacrifice and play with as much intensity as he delivers on the sideline. Martin can recruit the East Coast to South Carolina. He did it at a tougher spot in Kansas State.

He was a questionable hire when he took over for Bob Huggins and quickly made everyone look foolish for wondering about the move. He received a significant pay raise and more security with the Gamecocks. But South Carolina was also the big winner with this transaction.

Martin was replaced by Bruce Weber, a name coach with some great NCAA Tournament experience with a title game appearance in his time with Illinois. But recently, he has fallen off and was ultimately fired just earlier this offseason. Whether Weber will enjoy a change of scenery remains to be seen, but for now the biggest winner is the team that needed something the most.

The Kansas City Star has a spotlight on Bruce Weber "settling in" at Kansas State, including the usual stories of wall-to-wall meetings, evaluations and planning that new coaches jump into (living out of a hotel, multiple cell phones, the works...). In addition to talking about an upcoming trip to Brazil for the team, as well as announcing that the Wildcats' two early open spots in the 2012-'13 schedule would be at home, Weber gave a quick breakdown of his impressions of the team's top talent:

Jordan Henriquez – "Jordan has a lot of ability. He hit a couple threes yesterday. I didn’t know he had that in his bag of tricks. I asked him if he ever did any pick-and-pops, and he said, ‘No, they just had me driving to the hoop, but I can do that stuff.’ He made some shots, so that was positive."

A quick look around the college basketball coaching ranks brought a lot of high praise for Kansas State's hiring of Bruce Weber over the weekend despite the mixed reviews from sportswriters and fans. Weber replaces the popular Frank Martin who took more money and the lure of a challenge at South Carolina in a surprise move. Weber was just fired from the University of Illinois, so it will be interesting to have Weber back in the shadow of Kansas head coach Bill Self as well as Martin's own looming memory. Here are some takes from around the NCAA coaching ranks:

"No doubt Bruce Weber is a perfect fit for the K-State basketball program," said Steve Lavin. "He is a proven winner, tireless recruiter and man of great integrity. K-State hit a home run with the hiring of Bruce Weber and the Wildcat Nation will be pleased with the direction of the program for years to come."

Tom Izzo also loved the move and said, "Bruce is an incredible, incredible person. He does things the right way. He’s won more games as a percentage than anybody. He’s beat me and my team more often than not. I’ve recruited against him and lost, and I’ve recruited against him and won, and (it) hasn’t changed things."

Purdue's Matt Painter said, ""Bruce is a great coach and he’s a better person. If it wasn’t for him and Coach Keady, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ve learned a lot of basketball and I’ve learned a lot about life and how to treat people from Coach Weber. You’re not going to find a better guy."
