The mantra was repeated again and again this offseason: as good as the position players are (and will be) for the Kansas City Royals, the team will fail to contend unless the pitching is adequately addressed. Two weeks into the 2012 MLB season and the evidence is already starting to pile up. As the Royals have lost four straight, they find themselves with an overburdened bullpen and a losing streak of four games, including being swept in the home opening series against the Indians.

At this point, the Royals need someone -- anyone -- to pick up the mantle and turn this thing around. Luke Hochevar fell apart in his second start. Luis Mendoza was disastrous. The bullpen is overused already and Mitch Maier came in to pitch yesterday. Yes, Mitch Maier.

With the loss of Joakim Soria, the Royals bullpen lost a key pitcher and it lessened the depth that Dayton Moore had stocked up over the winter. While they should technically have more than enough arms for a standard roster, the Royals have zero starters they can rely upon to carry the team for a solid seven. Most nights they will be lucky to get five or six decent innings out of a starter. Unfortunately even in the last few games, they're already in the hole after the first two or three.

Last night's loss was the icing on the cake. The Indians scored 13 runs in the final game of the series and the weekend that left a sour taste in every fan's mouth. While the team will go through its fair share of ups and downs with such a young roster, it's also clear that the roller coaster is more about the lack of pitching talent than it is just a series of growing pains. Simply put, the Royals aren't ready to contend.

It's early in the season, so there's always a chance the team could turn around its fortunes. There's reason for hope in the bigger picture as well. However, the predicted reality before the season hit the Royals as squarely as it could this weekend -- with a second class AL Central franchise taking them out at every turn. This isn't about growing up. It's about reshaping the entire staff.

The Kansas City Royals lost their fourth straight game and suffer a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians 13-7. An error in the third inning opened the flood gates for the Tribe who scored six in the third and added four more runs in the fifth.

The Royals jumped out to a fast start grabbing a 3-0 lead against Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez. Chris Getz had the big blow in the inning with a two-run double.

Things went south for the Royals in the third inning. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Kansas City starter Luis Mendoza allowed three straight hits including a double to Shin-Soo Choo that trimmed the lead to 3-2. After issuing an intentional walk to Travis Hafner, Mendoza should have been out of the inning but Eric Hosmer couldn't come up with a foul ball off of the bat of Shelley Duncan.

Duncan followed with a three-run homer to left and a 5-3 lead for the Indians. Cleveland added another run in the inning on a Jack Hannahan single and led 6-3.

The Royals got one back in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Eric Hosmer but Cleveland blew it open in the fifth scoring four more times to make the score 10-4. Billy Butler drove in a run in the sixth but Cleveland answered with back-to-back homers in the eighth from Casey Kotchman and Jason Kipnis to make the score 13-5. The Royals added two runs in the ninth to make the final score 13-7.

Early on in the Kansas City Royals season the bullpen has been called upon often. Last night's contest versus the Cleveland Indians served as a typical example for the Royals. The Royals used six of their seven relievers versus the Indians in an 11-9 loss. Everett Teaford was the only reliever who didn't pitch Saturday, pitched four innings on Friday and could be a spot starter Wednesday night if Luke Hochevar isn't recovered from an injured left ankle.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore pulled the trigger on recalling right-handed reliever Louis Coleman from AAA Omaha late Saturday, as a result outfielder Jarrod Dyson was optioned down back to Omaha. Manager Ned Yost will have to figure out how to tweak his bullpen to not tire them out too quick, but hopefully the starting pitchers will start pitching later into games as well.

Anyone who believes that today's game between the Kansas City Royals and the Cleveland Indians is a contest between two second class AL Central teams would be mistaken. Apparently, it's a match-up worthy of trash talk, thoughts of retribution and showing third and fourth place teams who is better. After last night's game featured not one but two bench-clearing stare downs, the main question on everyone's mind is simple: how crazy will today's third game be?

Chris Perez is ready put the Royals away and is talking trash on Twitter leading up to the big fight:

Huge team win tonight; time for a sweep to tell the Royals it's not "Our Time", it's #TribeTime. P.S.You hit us, we hit you. Period.

Apparently, Perez is ready to bring his 7.36 ERA to the park today to finish off the Royals. Perhaps everyone can get up again and look even meaner across the field than they did the day before.

Nothing like watching 50 or so guys clear the benches in baseball, yell at each other and then... do absolutely nothing. The Royals and Indians aren't exactly known for a rivalry that boils over into violence, but fans at Kauffman Stadium yesterday got to see two bench-clearing incidents (can't call them brawl) in the Indians win over the Royals.

The first incident happened in the second inning when Royals starter Jonathan Sanchez hit Shin-Soo Choo with a pitch. It's the same pitcher-batter match-up from last June when Sanchez, as a member of the San Francisco Giants, hit Choo with a pitch on the hand that cost him significant time on the DL. When Sanchez hit him again, it led to this exchange:

In the very next inning, the Indians left it to their pitcher to get even (only baseball has this weird reciprocity going on). That's exactly what Jeanmar Gomez did, hitting Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas. Check that below:

The only players ejected were all on the Indians' side. Gomez was tossed immediately, as was Manny Acta. Somehow, Jack Hannahan believed it appropriate to get involved, which you can see in the second vid. He was tossed as well. The final game of the series is this afternoon at 1:10pm CT.

The Kansas City Royals will be trying to break a three-game losing skid and avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Saturday's game was tense with the benches clearing twice in the third inning.

Things could be even more testy on Sunday with the fiery Ubaldo Jimenez returning from suspension to pitch for the Indians. Jimenez was suspended five games for throwing at his former teammate Troy Tulowitzki during spring training. He made his season debut against the Toronto Blue Jays and carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. After that game he dropped his appeal of his five-game suspension and will be back on the hill on Sunday.

The Kansas City Royals fell behind early when the Cleveland Indians rattled off five runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. All five of those runs were given up by Jonathan Sanchez plus he walked three batters and hit Shin-Soo Choo as well as allowing four hits in the third inning.

The pitching did not get much better for the Royals as Tim Collins who relieved Sanchez pitched only 2 and 1/3 innings allowing four earned runs. Collins left the game with the Royals trailing 9-2.

Jonathan Sanchez (1-0, 3.60 ERA) gets the start tonight for the Kansas City Royals (3-4) against the Cleveland Indians (2-4), as the Royals look to notch their first home victory of the young 2012 season.

KC's home opener didn't go according to plan at all on Friday night, as Luke Hochevar was hit hard en route to an 8-3 loss. Hochevar was forced out of the game after being hit in the ankle with a comebacker. X-rays on Hochevar's ankle were luckily negative.

Sanchez, acquired by the Royals from the San Francisco Giants over the offseason, will be making his home debut for the Royals. In his Royals debut last week against the Angels, Sanchez needed 99 pitches to get through five innings, but only gave up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out four en route to the victory.

Kansas City's young but talented offense will face off against Jeanmar Gomez (0-0, 0.00 ERA). It will be Gomez' first start of the season, as his first turn in the rotation was skipped. Gomez has made a relief appearance this year though, striking out three in two innings of work against the Chicago White Sox.
