It took him 57 minutes to make up his mind, but coveted power forward Tony Parker has made his decision on where he will play college basketball, and it will not be for the Kansas Jayhawks.

Rather, Parker is heading west to play for Ben Howland and the UCLA Bruins, where he will hope to restore tradition to a school that has endured a nasty streak of poor play in recent seasons.

It's a blow to Kansas after losing Thomas Robinson to the NBA draft, but it became clear early on during Parker's announcement that the Jayhawks were no longer in the running, as Parker did not include a Kansas hat on the table with his final choices.

Although Parker would have been a major coup, with a recruiting pipeline as strong as Bill Self's, the team should be able to recover from this miss just fine.

The Kansas Jayhawks are still officially finalists for the services of top basketball recruit Tony Parker. The big man has several teams waiting on his announcement, which will come today at 3pm Central Time. Unfortunately the early signs are that KU is now a darkhorse contender rather than a frontrunner, which is what they would be if former assistant coach Danny Manning didn't take the head coaching gig with Tulsa.

Michael Carvell writes, "This was Parker's best official visit and he was blown away by the atmosphere." However he goes on to say, "When Manning left the building, so did Kansas' best chances. Otherwise, they might be our frontrunner. Timing is everything in life, isn't it?"

Parker, a 6-foot-9, 265-pound center from Miller Grove High in Lithonia, Ga., said earlier in the recruiting process that he will be choosing between Kansas, UCLA, Georgia, Duke and Ohio State. He is rated the No. 26 recruit for the class of 2012 by ESPNU.

The Kansas Jayhawks will learn today if another top recruit will be joining an already strong recruiting class when high school senior Tony Parker announces his decision about where he has decided to attend college.

The most likely destination appears to be UCLA. Bruins recruits Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson have reportedly been trying to get Parker to join them. Meanwhile, Parker's former AAU coach, Korey McCray, is currently an assistant coach with the Bruins.

Parker is expected to announce his decision at 3 p.m. CT at his high school.

The spring signing period ends on May 16, but with the attention given to big man Tony Parker, you’d think the deadline was in the next 24 hours. But when a player with the ability of Parker comes along and your favorite team is listed among the finalists, it’s natural to refresh various web sites checking for any signs of life. Think of the Dorial Green-Beckham recruiting drama for Missouri.

Parker has been compared to Kobe Bryant and Grant Hill by Mike Krzyzewski, the legendary head coach at Duke, and his team is among the five finalists for Parker. UCLA is the favorite, but Kansas, Ohio State and Georgia are also contenders despite what you read.

The late signing period is underway in college basketball, and Tony Parker is still considering headed to Kansas.

College basketball's late signing period is officially underway, and one of the most sought after recruits in the country will be on ESPNU on Wednesday night discussing his future. Tony Parker is scheduled to appear on ESPNU's signing-day show, but, per the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he won't be signing any commitment papers during the show.

Michael Carvell oer at the AJC took time out to break down the pros and cons of each contending school, which includes the Kansas Jayhawks.

Kansas - Pros: This was Parker's best official visit and he was blown away by the atmosphere. Cons: The Jayhawks got in the Parker sweepstakes too late. Former NBA star Danny Manning, who specialized in training big men at Kansas, was hired away as Tulsa's coach. Out of our four finalists, Kansas would be the toughest place for Parker to have an instant impact because of team depth. Final opinion: When Manning left the building, so did Kansas' best chances. Otherwise, they might be our frontrunner. Timing is everything in life, isn't it?

It's unfortunate that Manning's departure could result in the loss of an impact recruit, but that's just how college sports work. The Jayhawks, at least, did hold the best visit for Parker, so they are certainly still in the race.
