He has gone down as one of the greatest Wildcat football players ever, but Mark Simoneau was not just a star at Kansas State. Instead, his college career is going to be heralded for all-time as one of the newest members of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Announced as part of the 2012 class yesterday, Simoneau released a statement through K-State to talk about what he calls an “unbelievable honor.”

“This is truly an unbelievable honor for me, my family, the town of Smith Center and all of the K-State Nation,” said Simoneau. "I want to thank Coaches Barta and Snyder and all of the coaching staffs over the years for instilling in each of us the resolve to be successful not only as football players but also as young men.

“There are so many friends and teammates that were influential in my development and more importantly the success of our teams during my time at K-State. Representing those teams from the 1990s that put K-State Football in the national spotlight and also being the first player under Coach Snyder to be elected to the Hall of Fame is truly humbling.

“As a small town kid from Smith Center, Kansas, I never could have dreamed of such an honor, but it shows that with hard work and a dream, anything is possible.”

The 2012 College Football Hall of Fame class was announced on Tuesday. One of the inductees will be Mark Simoneau, a former linebacker from the Kansas St. Wildcats. Simoneau becomes just the second member of the Wildcats to ever be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, according to the K-State Athletics Twitter feed.

Simoneau played with the Wildcats from 1996 to 1999. In his final year at KSU, he was named a consensus All-American and was given the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award. Simoneau racked up over 400 tackles in his four years at the school.

After being selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2000 NFL Draft, Simoneau had an 11-year career in the NFL, playing with the Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.
According to SB Nation's Jason Kirk, former Kansas State Wildcats linebacker Mark Simoneau is on the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. The 10-year former pro and Super Bowl champion is the only representative for Kansas State on the ballot this season.

Simoneau played football for the Wildcats for 1996 to 1999 and in that time, made over 400 tackles and 46 tackles for loss. He was a 1998-99 All American, the 1999 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, a 1999 finalist for the Butkus Award and he is only one of two players in the history of Kansas State football to serve as team captain three different times.

After his college days were over, he was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He played three seasons in Atlanta before he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played from 2003 through 2005. Before the 2006 season, he was traded again, this time to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for Donté Stallworth. He was a Saint for the next four years but was often injured as he was on IR when the Saints beat the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. He was released before the 2010 season and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, however, after being injured once again on Nov. 17 of the 2010 season, he announced his retirement from the NFL.

If Mark Simoneau is inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, he would join Gary Spani as the only two former Kansas State Wildcats to share the honor.
