The Royals have lost five of their last six games, including most recently being swept in a three-game series by the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the losing streak the Royals are currently sitting in fourth place and are eight games behind the White Sox for the division lead.

The Royals are also in danger of falling into last place as they are only a half-game ahead of the Twins for fifth place. If the Royals have a good week they could make up some ground on the Tigers who are in third place and 3.5 games ahead of the Royals.

The next series for the Royals is at home against the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game series.

The Kansas City Royals came up just short as they fall 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the series finale of a three-game set on Sunday.

The Royals threatened in the bottom of the ninth when Alcides Escobar led off the inning with a single against Pirates reliever Jason Grilli. A sacrifice bunt moved Escobar into scoring position and Yunieksi Betancourt walked to put runners at first and second. However, Alex Gordon and Johnny Giavotella followed with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Gordon and Escobar finished with two hits each for the Royals. Escobar and Eric Hosmer drove in both of Kansas City's runs. Andrew McCutchen accounted for all three of Pittsburgh's runs with a first inning double and a third inning home run.

Bruce Chen takes the loss after allowing three runs and four hits in five innings of work. A.J. Burnett earns the win allowing two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. Grilli gets his first save of the season after working out of the jam in the ninth.

The Kansas City Royals can't seem to catch a break. After holding a 3-0 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, one crooked number of an inning later, the Royals were on the wrong end of a 5-3 final score. Now down two games to the Pirates, the Royals will try to escape without being swept in Sunday's series finale. Bruce Chen will try to be the band-aid on the mound for the Royals, while Pittsburgh will counter with A.J. Burnett.

Royals catcher Brayan Pena will hit fifth in the lineup for Kansas City and Johnny Giavotella will spell Yuniesky Betancourt at second base. Here are the starting lineups for both teams on Sunday.

Kansas City will try to avoid a sweep and avoid a four-game losing streak in the process on Sunday when they close out their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. Kansas City dropped a 4-2 decision to Pirates on Friday and then lost 5-3 on Saturday.

Bruce Chen will take his turn on the mound and will try to continue his recent surge since struggling out of the gate. Chen is 5-5 on the season with a 4.37 ERA but is 5-1 with a 3.79 since May 6th. He allowed four hits in seven innings against the Minnesota Twins last time out.

The Pirates will counter with former New York Yankees' right hander A.J. Burnett who is 5-2 with a 3.76 ERA this season. Burnett has been really good at home posting a 3-0 record with a 1.02 ERA in five starts.

A five-run fourth inning by the Pittsburgh Pirates was the difference in Saturday night's game against Kansas City Royals. The Pirates ultimately won 5-3 and in the fourth inning it was starting pitcher Vin Mazzaro who gave up the four runs in the fourth inning before being replaced.

Prior to that fourth inning the Royals had a 3-0 lead which came on a two-run home run by Yuniesky Betancourt in the first inning, and then a RBI single by Mazzaro that put the Royals up three.

The Royals offense was then held in check by four Pirates relievers who shutout the Royals over the final five innings and allowed only four hits. The closest the Royals came to getting back in this game was in the eighth inning when Eric Hosmer doubled to left, and then advanced to third base. However, no Royal player was able to get Hosmer to home plate.

This Royals have now loss five of their last seven games, including three in a row.

Vin Mazzaro looks for his third win of the season, as the Kansas City Royals look to rebound after dropping the first of a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mazzaro has made just two starts for Kansas City so far in 2012, but they've both been good enough to earn Mazzaro wins. Mazarro is 2-0 for Kansas City, with a 2.25 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in just 12 innings of work. Mazzaro, though, has only struck out five batters and has walked four -- a ratio that will need to improve if Mazzaro wants to sustain success.

Kansas City's bats, which were quieted in a 4-2 loss on Friday, will face off against James McDonald, who has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year. McDonald's record stands at just 5-2, but he is the owner of a 2.14 ERA, .95 WHIP and .194 BAA in 71.1 innings of work on the season. McDonald has walked just 20 batters as well, while striking out 71.

Televised coverage of Saturday's Royals/Pirates game can be found on FOX. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. CT.

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Luke Hochevar put the Royals in a 3-0 hole after only two innings of play, and the deficit was too much too overcome. Hochevar calmed down after the third inning and he did not give up any more runs from the fourth through six innings.

For the Pirates, Erik Bedard pitched seven solid innings to pick up his fourth win of the year. Bedard held the Royals offense to only five hits and two runs, and then Jason Grilli worked a perfect eighth while Joel Hanrahan retired the side in order in the ninth for his 16th save in 18 opportunities.

The Royals did make it a 3-2 game when Yuniesky Betancourt and Mike Moustakas each hit a RBI single in the third inning, but that is the closest they would get to the Pirates.
