The Kansas City Royals suffered their third straight loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday falling 7-1. Kansas City managed just five hits and their lone run came off of a solo home run by Salvador Perez.

Everett Teaford takes the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Teaford allowed a second inning home run to Johnny Peralta and a solo shot to Delmon Young in the fourth. Prince Fielder added a two-run blast in the fifth off of reliever Tim Collins.

Max Scherzer earns his eighth win of the season allowing five hits and one run over seven innings of work. No Kansas City player had more than one hit and Alex Gordon's double was the only extra base hit other than Perez's homer.

The Kansas City Royals look to close out the first half of the season and head into the All-Star break by avoiding a three-game sweep to the Detroit Tigers. The Royals dropped Friday's series opener 4-2 and followed that up with an 8-7 loss on Sunday.

Everett Teaford gets the call for the Royals as he looks to build on a solid performance in his last start. Teaford allowed three runs in seven innings of an 11-3 win over Toronto last time out. Kansas City could use a good outing from a starting pitcher after seeing its starters post a 7.63 ERA in the last nine games.

Detroit will counter with Max Scherzer who had his last start skipped due to a hamstring injury. Scherzer has been really good of late going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA over his last three starts.

Bruce Chen (7-7, 4.83 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) gets the start on Saturday, as the Kansas City Royals look to rebound from Friday night's loss, as the Royals continue a three-game series in Detroit against the Tigers.

Detroit, who was seen by many as the clear favorite in the AL Central, and one of the few teams that could challenge the Texas Rangers for American League supremacy, has stumbled out of the gate this year. Detroit is an even 42-42 headed into Saturday's contest, and they're in third place behind both Chicago and Cleveland.

Chen will look to put the Tigers back under .500 on Saturday -- and look to rebound from a poor start. Last Sunday, Chen gave up six runs on six hits (including three home runs) and a walk, in just five and 2/3 innings pitched. The outing inflated Chen's ERA to an ugly 4.83.

KC's bats will face off against Doug Fister (1-6, 4.61 ERA, 1.41 WHIP). Fister's lone win came on Bloomsday, June 16, nearly a month ago. In his two most recent outings combined, Fister has given up 15 runs (14 earned) in just 8 and 1/3 innings.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT. Televised coverage can be found on FOX Sports Kansas City. Online coverage can be found on MLB.tv.

The Detroit Tigers sent out rookie Drew Smyly to the mound against the Kansas City Royals and he struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings to defeat the Royals 4-2.

The Tigers also got a two-run home run from Delmon Young off of Royals starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez in the bottom of the sixth inning, and that play was the game winner. Royals starting pitcher Sanchez gave up all four runs in his 5.2 innings of work which dropped his record to 1-5, and also extended his winless streak to 10 starts.

The Royals were in this game when they scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Brayan Pena hit a RBI double, and then Jason Bourgeois knocked in Pena to tie the game at two runs apiece. Those would be the only runs the Royals would score all night.

The Royals could only manage one more hit from that point on and were shutdown by four Tigers relief pitchers including Jose Valverde who pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 16th save of the year.
