The Kansas City Royals drop two of three to the Chicago White Sox as they lose on Sunday by a score of 2-1. The Royals got a solid performance from starter Luis Mendoza who once again didn't get very much support from his offensive teammates.

Mendoza gave up a run in each of the first and second innings including a first inning homerun by Adam Dunn. He settled down from there pitching 7 1/3 innings while allowing just four hits. Chris Sale picks up his 11th win of the season going eight innings and scattering 10 hits and allowing one run. Addison Reed picked up his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Four different Royals had at least two hits including Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain. Kansas City however was just 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position, hit into two double-plays and left eight men on base.

Chris Sale is one of the toughest left handed pitchers in the league but the Royals are one of just two teams to hang a loss on the tough Chicago lefty this season. Lorenzo Cain will be making his eighth start of the season and will be hitting clean up for the Royals. Cain is hitting .238 with three RBIs since coming off the disabled list.

The Kansas City Royals will turn to Luis Mendoza as they seek a series win over the Chicago White Sox Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals suffered a 9-8 loss on Friday night coming out of the All-Star break but bounced back with a 6-3 win on Saturday.

Mendoza is 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA on the season and took the loss after allowing three runs in six innings last time out against Toronto. Mendoza could use some support from his offense after receiving just seven runs in his last five starts.

The White Sox will counter with All-Star lefty Chris Sale who is 10-2 with a 2.19 ERA on the season. One of Sale's two losses on the season came at the hands of the Royals who clipped him for three runs and seven hits in just five innings of a 5-0 win back on May 12.

Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar scored the eventual game winning run when he hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh off of Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy. The home run broke a 3-3 tie and the Royals ultimately won 6-3.

The Royals offense kept clicking as they put up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Royals up three. The two runs came when Jeff Francoeur hit a RBI single which knocked in pinch runner Jason Bourgeois, and the other run came when pinch hitter Lorenzo Cain hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mike Moustakas.

The Royals got a decent effort from starting pitcher Luke Hochevar who lasted five innings and gave up three earned runs, but it was the four relievers who helped seal the deal for the Royals. The relief staff pitched four innings of scoreless baseball and allowed only three hits. Greg Holland earned the win by pitching 1.1 innings by pitching in the seventh and eight innings, and the save went to Jonathan Broxton who pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 22nd save of the year.

After losing a 14 inning contest on Friday night, the Kansas City Royals look to rebound on Saturday night. And to do so, they'll need a strong effort out of starting pitcher Luke Hochevar.

Friday night's starter Bruce Chen couldn't escape the fifth inning, and Kansas City's bullpen threw nearly 10 innings in the one-run loss to the White Sox.

Hochevar will be tasked with quieting Chicago's bats, and working deep into the game. The start will be Hochevar's first since July 5, when he sprained his ankle. To date, Hochevar has a 6-8 record, 5.14 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Hochevar has held opposing hitters to a .281 average, while striking out just 71 in 98 innings of work.

Kansas City's offense will face off against 2012 All-Star and former Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy. Peavy has regained his Cy Young form this year, as evidenced by his 0.99 WHIP. Peavy has struck out 108 and walked just 26 in 120 innings of work, and has a 2.85 ERA and 7-5 record to show for his strong efforts.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. CT. Televised coverage can be found on FOX Sports Kansas City.

The Kansas City Royals didn't get the second half started on the right note on Friday night, losing a marathon game to the Chicago White Sox. Nine pitchers later, the Royals fell to Chicago 9-8 in 14 innings.

The Royals led the White Sox 7-6 headed into the ninth inning, but potential trade bait Jon Broxton blew the save -- his fourth blown save of the year.A.J. Pierzynski singled home Kevin Youkilis in the ninth, tying the game at seven all. Broxton really struggled in his outing, giving up two hits and two walks in an inning, and was lucky only to allow one run.

It looked like the Royals were going to lose in the 12th inning, after Gordon Beckham doubled home Jordan Danks in the top half. KC's offense battled back, though. Alex Gordon grounded out, scoring Jeff Francoeur and knotting the game up at 8-8 after 12 innings.

Everett Teaford was unable keep Chicago's offense suppressed, though. In the 14th, Kevin Youkilis hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Gordon Beckham, and giving the White Sox a 9-8 lead -- a margin that they'd win by.

Teaford picked up the loss, allowing one run on three hits and a walk in two innings of work.

Kansas City's starter Bruce Chen did not factor into the decision. Chen surrendered six runs on nine hits and three walks in four and 2/3 innings of work.

With the bullpen throwing nearly 10 innings on Friday night, the Royals will hope from a strong effort from Luke Hochevar.
