At one point, Joe Paterno was celebrated enough at Penn State to earn a statue and stand as one of the greatest coaches and figures in the history of college football. Now even being associated with him in any way is a risk that no one wants to take. Gary Pinkel tried to do just that and stand up for a man he considered a friend despite the drama and events unfolded at Penn State recently and he's being taken to ask for it by a Missouri state representative.

Rep. Sara Lampe recently took the time to speak out about quotes that Pinkel made that defended Paterno's legacy during the recent SEC Media Days that concluded today. Pinkel spoke out on the first day to introduce Missouri into their new conference and he chose to remark on Paterno while doing so. Lampe was apparently not impressed.

Here's Lampe's complete statement:

"University of Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel on Tuesday called the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno a 'great football coach' and a 'great man.' Paterno may have been a great coach, but as a man he failed at what mattered - protecting children from a sexual predator.

"As the exhaustive investigation into the Penn State scandal by former FBI Director Louis Freeh proved beyond a shadow of a doubt to all but the most sycophantic of Paterno worshipers, Coach Paterno protected and covered up for a serial child rapist and in doing so enabled him to keep raping children for another decade. A great man never would have done such a foul thing. That a great football coach did should be disturbing to everyone.

"Coach Pinkel's defense of the indefensible indicates that he holds the same attitude that allowed the reprehensible situation at Penn State to occur; the attitude that building a successful football program is more important than everything else, including protecting innocent children from rapists."

The Missouri Tigers are likely to be the least appreciated team coming into the SEC this season in terms of known coverage of its players given that the team has been in the Big 12 up until now and perhaps media coverage is less even than that of Texas A&M. It's interesting then to look at the preseason All-SEC teams announced today and find that's largely the case as Mizzou only has four players selected overall.

The Tigers failed to land a single player on either side of the ball on the first team or even the second team. Instead the team grabbed two player slots on both the offense and defense of the third teams. T.J. Moe is a wideout and Elvis Fisher along the front line for the third team offense. As for the defense, Zaviar Gooden and E.J.
One of the main lines of questioning Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel received at the SEC media days was about how his team would fare in the SEC and whether he resented the implication that they weren't up to par with "the best football league in the country".

Pinkel refused to bite:

"I don't think it's a chip necessarily," Pinkel said. "To me it's being a competitor. As a competitor, you get challenged a little bit. ... Bottom line, you got to go out and prove yourself. I'm fine with it. I have no problem with it. (I'm) not going to make any predictions. Never have, never will. You have to go out and compete and earn respect and win. Only way you're going to get respect is winning games."

The good news is, for all the hype the SEC likes to give itself, Missouri is walking into a position in the SEC East no worse than the one they left in the Big 12.

Tennessee and Florida, the two traditional powers in that division, are rebuilding while neither Georgia nor South Carolina have been a dominant squad in the last few seasons.

In short, the Tigers will have plenty of chances to win some football games next season.

While Gary Pinkel answered several questions about all aspects of the Missouri Tigers football program yesterday in his introductory presser on the first day of the SEC Media Days in Birmingham, Alabama, it was inevitable that the subject of the recent commitment of top rated recruit Dorial Green-Beckham would come up. For those curious about how the wide receiver is doing, the reports are very positive coming from Pinkel.

"As you all know, he was the No. 1 ranked player last year," said Pinkel. "Fortunately for us, he came to Missouri. He's been working hard all summer. Some of the players that come by my office, they talk about Dorial, they talk about what a great kid he is. All this attention for the last few years, that's encouraging. I think that's really the reason why he has a chance to become a great player, because he's humble, he wants to learn, he's a great competitor."

That said, Pinkel did make it clear that DGB would not receive the red carpet treatment when it comes down to earning time on the field.

"Anybody that comes into our football program, Jeremy Maclin, I can go on and on, come in and play at freshmen, you start at the bottom of the list and work your way up," he continued. "That's where he is, at the bottom of the list. He'll compete to get playing time, help us win football games. I know he's excited about doing it. We'll get going on that August 2nd."

Gary Pinkel took to the podium yesterday for his first SEC Media Days blitz ever and that meant he was asked several "introductory" questions from reporters wanting to know what it will be like to cover the Missouri Tigers football team and program. One such question went to the subject of playing in Columbia and what Faurot Field and the fans are like. Pinkel had nothing but great things to say, of course.

"We call our place 'The Zou.' It's a great place to play college football," said Pinkel. "First two games, Southeast Louisiana will be at night, but obviously the Georgia game will be also. That's kind of a whole new dimension I think in terms of playing in our stadium. Our fans, to say that they are excited about us being in the SEC would be a complete understatement. They've become fanatical about it. It's exciting to see. I think that says so much for the great respect nationally that the SEC has."

"But our fans are excited about it," he continued. "We're going to play some great teams that come in there. In this league you have to play well every week, you got to finish games, you have to win games in the fourth quarter. We understand that. We're excited about playing on the road. I've always enjoyed that part of college football. We're excited about teams coming in and having them play us in The Zou."

Georgia is up first in the SEC in week two in a game that will be played on ESPN2. The College GameDay crew was reportedly going to be there, but now it appears they're headed to Texas A&M's first game instead against Florida. Either way, it will be an exciting event.

For all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the entrance and introduction of the Missouri Tigers at yesterday's SEC Media Days event in Birmingham, Alabama, the main questions that matter about the team are about the product on the football field. To that end, head coach Gary Pinkel fielded a lot of questions about his players yesterday during his press conference, including about starting quarterback James Franklin. The good news for Mizzou fans is that Pinkel believes he will fine and ready for SEC play.

"Well, James Franklin is doing well," he said when asked about his injuries. "We expect, without question, for him to be a hundred percent. The trainer told us that two weeks ago. It will be interesting to see in August as he's throwing more consistently over and over again, repetition-wise to see his accuracy, which I think really improved a whole lot last year as the season went on.

"Full starter for a year coming back," he continued. "What you want to do is eliminate some of the mistakes in each game to become more of a complete quarterback. I think potential in our last three quarterbacks are playing in the NFL right now, I think he's in line. He's that kind of a potential player."

The Tigers certainly hope so. The team will need a proven leader under center in their first year in the SEC when first impressions are so important and both Mizzou and Texas A&M hope to make an early statement as to their level of credibility as a football program to several new recruits looking at the imports.

During the kickoff to SEC Media Days on Tuesday, Missouri Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel had plenty to say before he had his own press conference at the event.

Vahe Gregorian reports that Pinkel is confident that Mizzou quarterback James Franklin will fully recover from shoulder surgery by the time football camp begins. The junior QB is expected to be one of the top returning passers in the country in what will be his second year as a starter.

Franklin finished his 2011 season with just under 3,000 passing yards and just under 1,000 rushing yards. In addition, his 36 touchdowns was the third-highest total in Mizzou single-season history. Expectations are high for the young quarterback and an assurance from Pinkel of returning at full strength will likely put MU fans at ease.

At the very beginning of the 2012 edition of the SEC Media Days, it's clear that the ongoing drama, scandal and tragedy of the Penn State debacle is on the mind of everyone. From the outset, then, it's not surprising that SEC commish Mike Slive took to the podium to open the proceedings of this week with thoughts on Jerry Sandusky, Joe Paterno and the rest of the news even without mentioning them by name.

The SEC has its own coaching legends and figures that seem to be as big as the programs they represent. Yet Paterno stands as an example that no man is greater than the integrity that he holds and that no one is immune to the ramifications of a bad decision. From Bobby Petrino's absence at this year's event to the mention of the Penn State scandal, this will continue to be a theme throughout this week.
