Rory McIlroy claimed his second career major title on Sunday with an impressive 13-under score at the 2012 PGA Championship from South Carolina's Kiawah Island.

The fourth and final major tournament of the 2012 golf campaign is now a thing of the past, and fans of the sport will not soon forget 23-year-old winner Rory McIlroy's complete domination of Kiawah Island's Ocean Course en route to an eight-stroke victory.

McIlroy's eye-popping win not only put him into the record books for breaking Jack Nicklaus' seven-stroke margin of victory record for a major dating back to 1980, but also put the Irish born youngster firmly at No. 1 in the official world golf rankings, a distinction he will take into the 2013 season.

Although he finished a full 17 shots back of McIlroy's 13-under score, Kansas native Gary Woodland also turned in a strong performance over the weekend to finish in a tie for 42nd place. After opening his tournament with a 5-under par score of 67 on Thursday, Woodland's brutal 79 in the tumultuous wind on Friday completely erased his hot start and hurt his chances for a career-best finish.

But with the pressure, and more importantly the wind, off his back in rounds three and four, Woodland eased up and was able to play some of his best golf to-date. His final round score of 71 put him in rare company too, as only a handful of golfers were able to remain in red numbers over their final 18 holes. "When the wind snuck up I kind of got out of control with my golf swing, which is a little frustrating,” Woodland told The Topeka Capital-Journal on Sunday. “All in all, I’m starting to putt better, hit it better and I’m driving the heck out of it, so I’m pretty excited right now.”

The 2012 PGA Championship has come and gone and the beautiful scenery at Kiawah Island is now left behind on the golf calendar for everyone, but nearly everyone who played at this weekend's big event earned more than enough to take a return trip, should they choose to do so. Rory McIlroy raked in the big bucks as the winner of the tournament, but even those who finished far down the list still earned a sizable check.

McIlroy took in a lump sum of $1.445 million over four days worth of work, which is a tremendous boost to his career earnings. David Lynn took second place which earned him $865K.

Gary Woodland was tied at 42nd overall which means he earned a cool $29,500 for his efforts.

McIlroy is 11-under for the tournament and 4-under during his final round. He has no bogeys through 14 holes and hasn't given the rest of the field much of a chance to close the gap. Carl Pettersson, Ian Poulter and David Lynn are in a group of golfers who are tied for second at 5-under.

After finishing up their third round earlier Sunday morning, the players are back on the course at the 2012 PGA Championship for the final round. Rory McIlroy is still in the lead despite a strong charge from a few other players.

McIlroy is 10-under for the tournament and 3-under through his first seven holes of the final round. Ian Poulter has made the biggest move of the day, jumping eight spots into second place at 6-under. Poulter is 5-under through nine holes in the fourth round. Poulter came out of the gates of fire, notching birdies on his first five holes and six of his first seven.

While not as hot as Poulter, Tiger Woods has also moved up the leaderboard and currently sits in a tie for fourth place at 4-under. Woods is 2-under in the final round with six pars and two birdies in his first eight holes. Vijay Singh, who found himself in a tie for the lead when play was suspended Saturday, continues to fall.
