Kansas Jayhawks junior linebacker Prinz Kande will miss the remainder of the 2012 season after injuring his right knee against the Rice Owls. Kande was making the first start of his collegiate career in the 1-point loss to Rice, but he had to be helped off the field after injuring his ACL and MCL on Saturday.

Kande may be eligible for a medical redshirt from the NCAA, which could potentially see him keep an extra year of eligibility. To be eligible for a medical redshirt, the player in question cannot have competed in more than two of the school's contests or 20 percent of the season (whichever is greater), and Kande has not. If granted, Kande will be eligible for two more seasons.

Kande finished the game with three tackles and a sack, and Charlie Weiss confirmed that Kande was the only member of the Jayhawks to suffer serious injury.

The Kansas Jayhawks suffered a crushing defeat on Saturday at the hands of the Rice Owls, losing 25-24 on a last-second 45-yard field goal by Rice placekicker Chris Boswell. The loss dropped Kansas to 1-1 on the season, and the lackluster performance by his team had Kansas head coach Charlie Weis addressing the issue of "confidence" in his postgame comments:

"That's what our whole conversation in the locker room was. The number one thing they have to understand is it's not OK to lose. It's not like, `Well, you lost the game but good effort.' That's not okay. When you don't close out a game on offense, you don't close out a game on defense and you don't close it out on special teams that's just not acceptable, and that's just the way it is. The assistants and I have to do a better job of teaching and learning how to finish a game."

Next Saturday, Kansas welcomes the TCU Horned Frogs to Memorial Stadium.

Kansas quarterback Dayne Crist was understandably upset with his performance in the Jayhawks' 25-24 loss to Rice Saturday. The senior signal-caller, who transferred to Lawrence to reunite with former coach Charlie Weis, completed 16 of 28 pass attempts against the Owls, gaining just 144 yards. Crist also threw two interceptions, the second coming with 3:47 left to play and leading to Rice's game-winning 45-yard field goal as the final gun sounded.

After the game, Crist told reporters of his disappointment:

"From an offensive stand point, we didn't finish or make enough plays to win the game and that's the most important thing."

"I'm so disappointed. I didn't make enough plays and at the end of the day, that's the most valued trait in a quarterback and it is to make enough plays to win and we didn't do that today. Naturally, I'm upset."

Kansas will try to right the ship when it faces TCU at home next Saturday.

After a less-than-impressive victory over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, the Kansas Jayhawks were unable to stay undefeated during the Charlie Weis era, falling to the Rice Owls, 25-24.

Back and forth in the first half, Kansas managed to secure a four-point lead heading to halftime and they quickly extended that lead to 11 with the first drive of the second half. However, those were the last points the Jayhawks would score in the game as the Owls finished with 12 unanswered points.

A Charles Ross two-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter gave Rice the opportunity to tie, but a failed two-point conversion left them behind. They were able to get the ball back, though, and a 45-yard field goal from Chris Boswell as time expired in the fourth quarter went through the uprights and gave the Owls a one-point victory.

Box Score Hero: Charlie Ross averaged over six yards per carry with 94 yards on the ground on 14 carries. His fourth quarter touchdown put the Owls back in contention.

But Did They Cover? Kansas were 12-point favorites to beat Rice.

The Kansas Jayhawks ended the first quarter of their game against the Rice Owls leading 10-3.

Jayhawks quarterback Dayne Crist threw a 23-yard touchdown to Jimmay Mundine with 5:30 left in the first quarter to break a 3-3 tie in what began as a very sloppy game on both sides before each offense began to find a bit of a groove.

The opening period saw two turnovers for each team, with both losing a fumble and throwing an interception.

Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue started only 2-for-7 for 21 yards but has since gone 6-for-6 for 42 yards. Crist ended the first quarter 6-for-10 for 60 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Kansas is looking to start the season 2-0 under new coach Charlie Weis while Rice is looking for their first win of the season.

The latest round of predictions are out from David Ubben, ESPN's Big 12 blogger, for week two of the college football season, and good news awaits fans of Kansas football. The Jayhawks face Rice today in week two of the 2012 season, and Ubben believes that Kansas will only get better with another week of experience and chemistry under new head coach Charlie Weis.

Ubben writes, "KU got a win last week, but the Jayhawks are capable of playing a whole lot better. They do. Tony Pierson has another huge game and Dayne Crist gets his completion percentage back over 60. Confidence is building in Lawrence."

The Jayhawks faced South Dakota State in the first week of the season and won 31-17. It was the sort of middling victory that no one could feel truly good about considering it was against an FCS opponent. Today's game will tell a lot more about Weis' team and how far they have to go for respectability.

The Kansas Jayhawks launched into the Charlie Weis era with a 31-17 victory over South Dakota State in their opener and enter the second week of the season as favorites against the Rice Owls. In their opener, the Owls fell 49-24 to the UCLA Bruins, although they kept it close for much of the game.

Despite the win, though, the Jayhawks will want to see better play from quarterback Dayne Crist before the beginning of Big 12 play. Crist completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes against SDSU; 17-of-36 attempts. He did find the end zone once, hitting Mike Ragone from two yards out.

Defensively, Kansas will look to avoid allowing the big play as they did against the Jackrabbits when they allowed Zach Zenner to run 99 yards for a score, giving SDSU a 7-0 lead early.

Game time/date: 2:30 p.m. CT, Saturday

Questions regarding the immediate future of defensive tackle Ty McKinney were finally cleared up Thursday when Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis announced that the junior college transfer will enroll at Kansas University in January.

McKinney, a 6'3, 310-pound tackle for Trinity Valley Community College in Palestine, Texas committed to KU, but elected not to attempt to catch up academically and join the team late. A good move in the eyes of Owen, the managing editor at SB Nation's Jayhawks blog, Rock Chalk Talk:

"I like what we have on the roster, yes it could be better, but I'm not convinced that rushing McKinney into action would have done anything to dramatically improve an already improving group. Now we know what we're working with at the position and we'll continue to watch hoping that we see continued progress."

McKinney is now scheduled to make his debut with Kansas in fall 2013 when he'll face two remaining years of eligibility.
