In a narrow 24-20 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils, Missouri had to rely on back-up quarterback Corbin Berkstresser to lead the Tigers to victory with James Franklin out with a shoulder injury. However, it wasn't the Missouri coaches that decided to withhold their starting quarterback. It was Franklin himself who chose to sit out.

"It was just too painful for him, and he didn't want to play," Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel told reporters after the game, "He said, ‘It hurts too much. I can't play.'"

It was also reported that Franklin refused cortisone injections prior to the game that would've dulled the pain enough for the junior to take the field. In an interview with the St. Louis Post Dispatch, his father, Willie Franklin, revealed that the quarterback has never had medication before in his life.

"He's never even taken an aspirin once in his life," Willie Franklin said. "In our family, we don't believe in taking medication (for pain) or trying to soften anything with any drugs."

In Franklin's absence, Berkstresser completed 21-of-41 passes for 198 yards.

Injury plagued Mizzou escape ASU's late comeback, but now move on to face their second top-10 opponent this season.

In front of another sellout crowd at Faurot Field, an injury ravaged Missouri Tigers defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils. Thank goodness.

It looked like Mizzou would easily handle the Sun Devils as ASU committed error after error in the first half, but in typical, nay, predictable Mizzou fashion, the Tigers wouldn't let it be that easy. Trouble on the offensive line and in the kicking game are the biggest reasons this game wasn't a blowout in favor of the Tigers. For the second consecutive week, the Tigers were unable to salt away an opponent that gave them every chance early on.

James Franklin, Zaviar Gooden and Elvis Fisher were all missing from Saturday's lineup. Let's get this out of the way right now. Corbin Berkstresser played admirably in this game, but don't fool yourself. He is not the second coming of Tim Tebow and is not better than James Franklin. With Franklin in this game, the Tigers throw the ball more and probably win this one by two touchdowns. Berkstresser was great in short yardage and one would think that David Yost might be planning on utilizing him in special packages near the goal line or on third and short. The red zone interception thrown by Berkstresser was a critical moment in the game. A touchdown on that drive and the Tigers might end up going into half with a 24-7 lead. Another week, another critical red zone turnover by the Tigers. Luckily, it was the only Mizzou turnover of the evening.

Sheldon Richardson was a monster. The dude just lived in the backfield for almost the entire game, making life hell for both ASU quarterbacks and running backs. Along with Richardson, Kony Ealy made some big plays for the Tigers. Ealy was a guy I started keeping tabs on back in week one. This defensive line has the makings of being Pinkel's best in his Mizzou tenure.

Along with Ealy and Richardson, the Tigers have some real playmakers on defense. Kip Edwards made an outstanding read on his pick in the first quarter which swung the first half momentum in favor of the Tigers. EJ Gaines continues to make plays not only in the secondary, but has shown great ability to get in the backfield and shut down the run game. Michael Sam and Brad Madison are beasts on the edges, Sam notched multiple sacks in the game, including a big one that resulted in a fourth and long and the Gaines punt return reverse that went for a big gain. Add in Will Ebner, Zaviar Gooden (when healthy) and some solid depth and the Tigers may be able to keep pace with the big, bad SEC defenses we keep hearing so much about and maybe steal a road game later this year.

The defense has caused turnovers and been a huge factor in the young season. It's quite the script flip on the recent history of Mizzou football. This very well may be the best defense Mizzou has had since the 1960s and 70s.

Now it's on to the other Columbia to face the South Carolina Gamecocks and perhaps the best offensive and defensive players in the country in running back Marcus Lattimore and defensive end Jadevon Clowney. The Tigers offensive and defensive lines will have their plates full.

Some questions have been raised about Lattimore's health, but Clowney is going to make life a living hell for this patchwork offensive line. This is the first big road test of many for the Tigers this season. Mizzou must win at least one of their road games with South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida to contend in the SEC East. The Tigers are already behind the eight ball with their loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. Going between the hedges as a double-digit underdog, Mizzou has the odds stacked against them. The D has to make plays and Franklin must be healthy if Mizzou is going to pull the upset against their second top-10 opponent this season.

With James Franklin out thanks to an injury, the Missouri Tigers started freshman quarterback Corbin Berkstresser in his place against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday. He had a decent first game, going 21 of 41 for 198 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions as the Tigers managed to hold onto a 24-20 win.

Talking after the game, he expressed his delight at getting his first start with the Tigers:

"It's exhilarating. It's the kind of thing you think about when you sign your letter of intent. Playing in front of a full crowd like that, in front of Mizzou Nation, it was awesome. It was great to get a win for this team, and everybody that works hard for this program.

In that same press conference he spoke about the help that he received from James Franklin during the course of the win:

"He helped me a lot tonight. Every time I came to the sideline he was there to help me, whether it was my footwork or telling me what to watch out for, he was there. With me and him it's sort of a race to see who can help each other first."

The Missouri Tigers eked out a 24-20 non-conference win over Arizona State on Saturday night, and they did it without starting quarterback James Franklin, who was still recovering from a shoulder injury. Franklin came out before the game and warmed up, with the Gary Pinkel's decision between his starter or backup Corbin Berkstresser coming down to the wire. In the end, Pinkel went with Berkstresser but he said Franklin is not dealing with structural damage, just that the pain was too much (via MUTigers.com):

"That was going to be a game-time decision. He has an irritation/inflammation in his shoulder. There are no structural problems at all -absolutely none. It was just too painful for him, and he didn't want to play. Between him and the medical staff, they make those decisions. I don't make those decisions. I told Corbin last night that he might have to play. I was hoping James could play, but he didn't feel like he could play. We'll find out next week on his health."

Berkstresser performed admirably in relief, hitting 21 of 41 attempts for 198 yards. While it wasn't the typical offensive output you would see with Franklin running the ship, he did just enough to hold off the Sun Devils and pick up a crucial win to rebound from last week's disappointment in the SEC opener.

The Tigers now hit the road for their first SEC game away from the friendly confines of Faurot Field. They'll face South Carolina in Week 4, and it's likely Franklin will be in better shape to give it a go.

The Missouri Tigers beat the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils, 24-20, on Saturday night in Columbia, Mo.,, but once again the Tigers let a large lead slip away late in the game. The Tigers led 24-7 against the Sun Devils, before Arizona State scored twice in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 24-20. A Missouri goal-line interception in the final minute of the game salvaged the win for Gary Pinkel's club.

SB Nation Missouri blog Rock M Nation addressed the issues of the Tigers' late-game fades to start this season, caused mainly by the team's youth:

When You Have A Thin, Brutally Young Team...

...you struggle to play at a consistently decent level for four straight quarters. That's how this works. Gary Pinkel said after the game that this is the youngest team he's ever started, and while I'll take his word for that, it isn't difficult to see not only the young players that were involved, but the young players that have been pushed into larger roles than anybody anticipated.

.......

And oh, has Missouri faded. The Tigers were up, 17-9, early in the third quarter against Georgia, then got outscored, 32-3, the rest of the way. Mizzou was up 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter last night, then got outscored, 13-0, in the final 15 minutes. This team closed consistently strong last year; this year, not so much.

The Missouri Tigers defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils, 24-20, on Saturday night in Columbia, Mo. After building a big lead, Missouri needed an interception at the goal line in the final minute secure the win.

After creating a 24-7 lead, Missouri allowed two scores early in the fourth quarter as Arizona State began a comeback. Running back Marion Grice put both scores in the end zone for the Sun Devils, cutting the deficit to 24-20. The second touchdown should have made it a three-point game, but Arizona State mishandled the snap on the point-after.

The Sun Devils would get a final shot with two minutes left in the game. A 25-yard punt return from Jamal Miles, who gave Missouri a 15-yard field in the first quarter with a fumbled return, set up Arizona State with a 21-yard field. On third down, however, ASU quarterback Taylor Kelly threw an interception to Kenronte Walker at the goal line, and Missouri hung on to the win.

Freshman quarterback Corbin Berkstresser was 21-41 for 198 yards in his first start, filling in for the injured James Franklin. His main target was the reliable T.J. Moe, who pulled down eight receptions for 88 yards. Running back Kendial Lawrence scored two rushing touchdowns while adding 62 yards on the ground.

The Missouri Tigers defense has been the reason why they are leading 17-7 over the Arizona St. Sun Devils at the half. In the first quarter Kip Edwards intercepted Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly, and that pick set up the first touchdown for Missouri.

The Missouri offense has struggled some since starting quarterback James Franklin is out with a shoulder injury, and he has been replaced by freshman Corbin Berkstresser who has not played all that well. At the half he has completed 10-of-18 passes, but has only 68 yards plus he has an interception as well.

Berkstresser is a mobile quarterback as he has rushed the ball 12 times for 26 yards, and he scored the teams first touchdown on an 11-yard run.

The other Missouri touchdown came on a 7-yard run by Kendial Lawrence on a short four-play, 18-yard drive which was set up by a 48 yard punt return.

Arizona State did get on the board late in the second half when Kelly connected with running back D.J. Foster for a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Starting in Franklin's place is freshman Corbin Berkstresser, who is making his first start, and after one quarter of play is just 3-for-8 for only six yards. However, Berkstresser has rushed for 18 yards including scoring the only touchdown of the game so far on a 6-yard run.

That touchdown was set up when the Missouri defense intercepted Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly near mid field.
