As today's NFL trade deadline approaches, various teams could have a dynamic, veteran receiver if they felt the need to bolster their passing game.

The NFL trade deadline is filled with more bark than bite year after year, so even this column is likely to be meaningless by the time the clock hits 4 p.m. Still the possibilities of a move like a mid-season trade is enough to make everyone at least wonder at what could be, which means football fans coast to coast will wonder if their respective team will make a move to add a player for the stretch run or find some future assets.

Mike Thomas has been the only receiver changing hands before the deadline this year -- a blip on the transaction screen that sent Thomas to the Lions in exchange for a 5th round choice in 2014. Yet there are a few impact-level receivers likely available for the team that realizes a weakness in the passing game who wants to make a significant run in 2012.

The Carolina Panthers have a couple names potentially on the block in Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams. Smith offers what so few receivers could in the passing game -- a tested veteran who can make the big play and still displays big-game impact in his 12th season in the NFL. While Smith reportedly wants to stay in Carolina, if a team made a deal sweet enough, they could add a player who already has 589 yards in just 7 games. Yes, it's going to be another great year statistically for Smith.

The same could be said for Dwayne Bowe, who is having a solid year after holding out the entire preseason and who is enduring another year with poor quarterback play on the Chiefs. The team is 1-6 and generally regarded as the worst team in the NFL in the first half of the year. While they have the on-paper talent to turn things around, there has been zero evidence of that happening. At this point, a trade for future assets would help the long-term perspective of the club.

Of course, this is what typically happens when a team is performing poorly. They are expected to unload anything of value for the sake of a draft pick or future considerations. The Panthers in particular have a hole in the front office after the firing of general manager Marty Hurney just a few weeks ago, which makes it hard to imagine any significant moves would happen soon.

The same can be said of the Kansas City Chiefs, who remain mathematically very much alive with only 3 games separating the entire division with over half a season to go. It's not as if anyone expects that much, but there are many questions to answer about when, if ever, is the right time to wave the white flag at the midseason point.

Still for a team looking to improve its offense, two franchise-best receivers are available for the right price. Perhaps a second round pick would earn the half-season services of either one. Whether or not that's worth the price is debatable, but the goods are likely waiting in the store if anyone should be interested in shopping.

The NFL's new trade deadline is tomorrow which means the Chiefs have another day to consider their relationship with their leading receiver.

Thursday is the temporary D-Day in the NFL -- the new deadline established for all trades given the devastation and challenge of dealing with and around Hurricane Sandy. That means that NFL teams were given another 48 hours or so to discuss potential deals before they would give up the chance during the 2012 season.

This means that a team like the Chiefs had another two days to discuss what to do with their assets. Should they trade some of their top players like Dwayne Bowe or even Glenn Dorsey? Should they hold onto them knowing that over half the season remains? What will be the message to fans if they trade them? What will they gain if those players walk after the season?

Those are key questions for the Chiefs to answer, and they are not easy conclusions to arrive at. If Scott Pioli has job security, then generating future assets makes more sense than if he's on the hot seat. If he ships out a player or two of Bowe's caliber, then he's throwing his friend (and coaching hire) Romeo Crennel under the bus. Every potential answer comes with positive and negative outcomes.

That said, the Chiefs are staring down a harsh reality at this point. Players and coaches will have you believe they can turn things around. It's mathematically possible for the Chiefs to win the AFC West. They are three games out with two more against the Denver Broncos and nine games remaining overall.

Yet the Chiefs haven't showed an ability to win a game. They can't even take the lead. Despite the obvious talent on board, there's been no on-field signs of life in any way. Are they the worst team in the NFL? Quite possibly. That means the team needs to swallow a bitter pill and look ahead for the long run.

Whether or not Scott Pioli will be making the draft choices for the Chiefs next April, the team needs to acquire as many assets as it can. If it can get better than a compensation pick for Bowe, then they should make that move before Thursday's deadline. If they can get the same for Dorsey, then that needs to happen as well. Either that or they need to reach a deal for the long-term with that player and show the fans that something is happening underneath the hood.

A recent USA Today column proposes five trades that should happen before the deadline including players like Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe, Browns WR Josh Cribbs and Indianapolis pass rusher Dwight Freeney.

It wasn't too long ago that Dwayne Bowe to the Miami Dolphins was a trade rumor swirling unfounded in the NFL winds. The media picked up on it then quickly dismissed it. Yet as the trade deadline approaches on the Tuesday after Week 8, Bowe is likely to be a name thrown around here and there -- even if there's no merit to a deal.

Whether or not Scott Pioli will move his best wide receiver is debatable, but Nate Davis of USA Today says there's one deal he'd like to see happen: Bowe to the Cincinnati Bengals. In a recent column concerning the five NFL trades he'd like to see, he proposes the Bowe trade among many others that include Josh Cribbs and Dwight Freeney. Davis writes:

He never did get the long-term deal he wanted and was forced to settle for the $9.5 million franchise tag in a city he apparently wants to leave. But the Bengals have the cap room to pay a player like Bowe long-term and, more important, they could clearly use a bona fide wingman to complement A.J. Green.

Bowe isn't a transcendent talent, but his size and ability to move the chains would perfectly mesh with the field-stretching Green, who was essentially erased last week by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who didn't seem to fear Andy Dalton's other options.

Meanwhile, Kansas CIty Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who already has a Bowe clone in Jonathan Baldwin, could get a nice parting gift for the free-agent-to-be ... assuming Pioli's still around to shape the roster in 2013.

While the Bengals could use another receiver like Bowe, the reality is that nearly every team needs a top receiver to add to their passing game. The idea that Baldwin and Bowe are interchangeable is to oversimplify the Chiefs offense and to completely miss the strengths of both receivers. Even if they were a "clone", which they are not, Baldwin has hardly shown the ability to take over as the team's top receiver.

The thought makes for an interesting debate, but it's not going to happen.
