SB Nation Chiefs blog Arrowhead Pride reacts to the Chiefs' OT loss to the Steelers.

There's no shortage of reaction from SB Nation Kansas CIty Chiefs blog Arrowhead Pride Tuesday morning following the Chiefs' 16-13 loss in overtime Monday night to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Chiefs took a lead in regulation for the first time this year while still falling to 1-8, but that wasn't even among the positives listed by Joel Thorman in his look at what the team did well and didn't do well. Named among the positives were the Chiefs' defense holding Pittsburgh to a mere 249 yards of offense as well as the play of linebacker Derrick Johnson, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and running back Jamaal Charles.

But since it's the Chiefs, there were also plenty of negatives Thorman took from the game. Matt Cassel struggled under pressure again, going 1-for-8 on blitz situations. Cassel was also 0-for-8 on third down. Meanwhile, coach Romeo Crennel fell to 0-9 lifetime against the Steelers.

Cassel opened the Chiefs' overtime with a costly interception which, Thorman wrote, was sadly predictable.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to walk away from Monday night with a victory but they might have lost a greater battle with the news that Ben Roethlisberger, the team's starting quarterback, has a sprained shoulder injury on his throwing arm. That means his status is uncertain for the team's next game in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens, their AFC North division rivals.

Roethlisberger left in the third quarter after getting hit by Kansas City Chiefs linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston on the same play. Byron Leftwich came into the game and played the duration of the Monday Night Football contest since the team sent Roethlisberger back to the locker room.

Big Ben was 9 of 18 before he was hit and the rainy weather made for a poor night for each team's quarterback. Leftwich would presumably get the start against the Ravens should Roethlisberger be pronounced out for any length of time.

The Chiefs need to reject the idea that they won any moral victory against the Steelers.

What's inevitably going to come out over the next few days from people around the team is the heart and effort the Chiefs put into their 16-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. I'm sure it'll be something Romeo Crennel talks about all week long. It doesn't matter though.

These are professional athletes and the mere fact that anyone would try and rationalize this game as some kind of a moral victory is basically shouting "WE DIDN'T GET EMBARRASSED!", and to play it off as some kind of good thing is down-right pathetic. Please don't come as us like that, bro.

One thing we learned about the Kansas City Chiefs team tonight is that we weren't crazy in thinking they had the makings of a pretty good defense. Those guys stepped up in a big way. Derrick Johnson played out of his mind, Justin Houston played out of his mind and the group as a whole isn't the biggest of problems for this team. That lies with the quarterback position, and holy crap it's bad.

That's not telling anybody anything they don't already know though. Whether it was the signing of Shaun Smith, releasing of Stanford Routt, changing to Gary Gibbs as defensive coordinator, or the match-up against their former head coach in Todd Haley, this Chiefs team played with a passion we hadn't seen yet before this year.

While quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did leave the game early with an injury and was replaced by Byron Leftwich, things were still being handled while Big Ben was in the game from the Chiefs defense.

If the Chiefs defense can play the way they did against the Steelers and Jamaal Charles can break off those couple of big runs he's always so close to breaking, the Chiefs will win a few games this season. The only thing that matters is winning or losing. Trying to rationalize it could almost seem disrespectful in a way. They don't need our pity. But they do need to win some games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 16-13, on a Shaun Suisham field goal 51 seconds into overtime Monday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs began the night's scoring on a 12-yard touchdown run from Jamaal Charles to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. That touchdown marked the Kansas City Chiefs' first lead in regulation this season.

The Chiefs converted a field goal early in the second half to take a 10-0 lead, but Pittsburgh immediately answered with a field goal of its own to cut the lead to seven.

On the following possession, the Pittsburgh Steelers turned the field on Kansas City, forcing the Chiefs to punt from their own 12-yard line and beginning the subsequent possession at midfield. Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh offense then began a seven-play, 50-yard drive, capped off by an amazing, one-handed catch by Mike Wallace to tie the game, 10-10.

On the third play of the second half, Ben Roethlisberger stepped up in the pocket and was sacked by Tamba Hali. Roethlisberger injured his shoulder on the play and did not return.

Backup quarterback Byron Leftwich did not do much offensively but did enough, leading the only scoring drive of the second half -- an 11-play, 73-yard drive ending in a Shaun Suisham field goal to give the Steelers a 13-10 lead.

Despite playing mistake-filled football and showing an inability to take advantage of Pittsburgh mistakes, the Kansas City Chiefs were still given a chance at the end of the game after the Steelers punted following a fourth-and-inches situation. Matt Cassel, with no timeouts, then drove the Chiefs 52 yards in 1:52 and Ryan Succup converted a 46-yard field goal attempt to tie the game as time expired in regulation.

Cassel's late-game heroism went for naught, however, as he was intercepted on the second play of overtime by Lawrence Timmons, who returned the ball to the 5-yard line. The Steelers wasted no time, kicking the game-winning field goal on the first play of their possession to win Monday night's contest, 16-13.

Winners

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles had the best game statistically. He rushed the ball 23 times for 100 yards and one touchdown. Pittsburgh wide receiver Mike Wallace had only 14 receiving yards but was the recipient of the game's only other touchdown.

Losers

Matt Cassel turned from hero to goat in a matter of minutes. His stat line was dismal as well, with 11-of-26 passes for only 154 yards.

Even considering Cassel's night, Ben Roethlisberger may finish the night as the biggest loser. He passed for only 84 yards and suffered an injury that knocked him out of the game and may cause him to miss time moving forward.

Odds

The Chiefs couldn't find a way to win, but their 3-point loss covered the spread. Pittsburgh was favored to win by 11.5 points.

Up Next

The Steelers take their 6-3 record into a divisional matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, while the Kansas City Chiefs look to get off the schneid against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers are still tied, 10-10, after three quarters of play at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Monday night, as Ben Roethlisberger is being evaluated for a right shoulder injury.

The Chiefs appeared to have scored on two different occasions in the third quarter but ended up with no points. On the first, Kansas City looked to have completed a nine-play scoring drive when Dwayne Bowe took a short Matt Cassel pass and ran 22 yards for a touchdown. The score was nullified by a holding penalty, however, and four plays later Ryan Succop missed a 33-yard field goal.

On the next series, it seemed as if linebacker Justin Houston had returned a Byron Leftwich fumble 21 yards for a touchdown, but the play was reversed on replay and ruled an incomplete pass.

Jamaal Charles still leads all rushers, now with 81 yards on 19 carries. Cassel is 6-13 for 90 yards passing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been forced to turn to their back-up quarterback Byron Leftwich against the Kansas City Chiefs as they hope for a win in what should have been the easiest game for the team thus far in 2012. The Chiefs and Steelers are currently tied in the third quarter, and the teams have been tough along the lines which means it will likely come down to the running games. That's a good thing for Leftwich.

Roethlisberger went to the locker room after being hit by Chiefs linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. He might return to the game but for now Leftwich is in the game and Todd Haley now must adjust his game plan accordingly. Given Leftwich's lack of recent experience -- he only had 7 passing attempts last season -- it will be interesting to see whether he's rusty coming into a close game in the rain.

The Chiefs defense has a real chance to show something here in a season where any good news would be welcome.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping for a win on the field. They're also hoping for one off the field. The word on Ben Roethlisberger is that he was taken off the field in the third quarter after suffering an injury when hit by a couple of Kansas City Chiefs defenders and now the team is taking him to the locker for further monitoring.

Roethlisberger is having a potential MVP season for the Steelers so far, and it's hard to imagine the Steelers offense being able to function nearly as well without him under center. While the running game has been a success in recent weeks, Rashard Mendenhall remains an issue to watch health-wise, so the loss of both would definitely hurt the team.

For now, Justin Houston and Tamba Hali have succeeded in affecting the game with their ability to get at the quarterback. In this instance, it's completely affected the game.

Thus far, Roethlisberger is 9 of 18 for 84 yards and a touchdown.

After building a 10-0 lead, the Kansas City Chiefs head to halftime tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers, 10-10, on Monday night in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers tied the game on a close-call touchdown catch by Mike Wallace. After missing the initial catch in the end zone, Wallace pinned the ball between his knees, then secured the ball just before sliding out of bounds.

To get on the board earlier in the quarter, the Steelers ended an 11-play drive that lasted over five minutes with a 35-yard field goal from Shaun Suisham.

The Chiefs started the second quarter at Pittsburgh's 3-yard line, but failed to score a touchdown. After Jamaal Charles was stopped on third down, Ryan Succop put through a 22-yard field goal for the 10-0 lead. After that score, Kansas City's offense slowed down considerably, totaling just 33 yards in the frame.

Charles leads all rushers with 65 yards on 14 carries, including a 12-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Matt Cassel is 5-9 with 78 passing yards.
