Wildcats fall behind on kick return touchdown, unable to capitalize on second quarter momentum.

The Kansas State Wildcats trail the Oregon Ducks 22-10 at halftime of the 2013 Fiesta Bowl in a game that has seen a kickoff return for a touchdown, a fake punt, a 45-second touchdown drive, and plenty of action on both sides of the ball.

Oregon kick returner De'Anthony Thomas returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, and a two-point conversion gave the Ducks a quick 8-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota hit Thomas with a 23-yard touchdown pass, capping a seven-play, 54-yard scoring drive and extending the Oregon lead to 15-0.

Kansas State finally answered back in the second quarter, when Collin Klein's 6-yard touchdown run cut the deficit to eight points. The Wildcats seized the momentum, driving for a field goal and stopping an Oregon fake punt at midfield. However, Anthony Cantelli's field goal attempt sailed wide left with a minute to play. Oregon struck back quickly, with Mariota connecting with Kenjon Barner for a 24-yard touchdown to complete a 45-second scoring drive and give the Ducks a 22-10 halftime lead.

Klein has been effective, completing 11 of 18 pass attempts for 104 yards, and running 10 times for 10 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Chris Harper caught six passes for 55 yards.

Mariota has completed 6 of 12 passes for 106 yards. The freshman quarterback does have two scores, and was 3 for 4 in the half's final possession. Barner has run seven times for 23 yards.

Bill Snyder and the Kansas State Wildcats accepted an invitation to participate in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl, where they'll take on the Oregon Ducks.

It's official: the Kansas State Wildcats are headed to the 2013 Fiesta Bowl.

Kansas State accepted the bid to participate in the BCS bowl game on Sunday, just one day after claiming the Big 12 title after defeating the Texas Longhorns.

The Fiesta Bowl has traditionally been tied in with the Big 12 champions, and this season is no exception. The 2012 Fiesta Bowl featured Oklahoma State and Stanford, with Brandon Weeden and the Cowboys knocking off Andrew Luck and the Cardinals in overtime, 41-38.

The 2013 Fiesta Bowl marks the second time in Kansas State history that the Wildcats are playing in a BCS bowl. Kansas State's other appearance came in 2003, when the Wildcats lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl, 35-28.

Kansas State also appeared in the 1997 Fiesta Bowl, when the Wildcats knocked off the Syracuse Orange, 35-18.

The Wildcats have not won a bowl game since 2002, when they defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Holiday Bowl. Since then, Kansas State has lost the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, 2006 Texas Bowl, 2010 Pinstripe Bowl and 2011 Cotton Bowl.

Kickoff between Kansas State and Oregon is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT, on Jan. 3.
