The Jayhawks had no problem with the mid-major school.

The No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks earned a big lead early against the Belmont Bruins and cruised to a 89-60 victory at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. to improve to 8-1 overall.

Kansas allowed just five points in the first 6:30 of the game as they jumped out to a 16-5 lead. The Jayhawks never looked back and increased the lead to as many as 41 points in the second half as four players tallied double-digit points in the rout. Leading the way for the Jayhawks were freshman Ben McLemore, freshman Andrew White III and senior Travis Releford, each of whom finished with 17 points for Kansas.

From beyond the arc Belmont struggled mightily, hitting just 8-of-38 3-point attempts. The Bruins' leading scorer entering the game, Ian Clark, managed just five points, while turning the ball over four times.

Following the victory, the Jayhawks will have three days off before a home game on Tuesday against the Richmond Spiders. Belmont will look to bounce back on Wednesday with a home game against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

The mid-majors have been a thorn in the Jayhawks' side in the past so they are preparing for Belmont with that thought in mind.

It isn't the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but this matchup makes for one of those upsets that nobody calls but everyone enjoys when tournament time comes around as the Kansas Jayhawks prepare to host the Belmont Bruins on Saturday night.

Kansas head coach Bill Self has felt the bite of the mid-majors over the years as the only non-conference home games the team has lost in the past 10 seasons all came at the hands of mid-majors. The Richmond Spiders, Nevada Wolf Pack and Oral Roberts Golden Eagles all took down the Jayhawks.

Belmont is a team with the capability to add another name to the list and Self told KUSports.com is well-aware of this fact:

"I'm telling you, they could beat us. If Belmont played in our league, they'd have success. They would."

Belmont has already beaten Stanford this season and come into the game with a tidy 7-2 record while the Jayhawks sit at 7-1. The Jayhawks will have to prevent Belmont from getting hot from behind the three-point line as they shoot 42.1 percent from three including senior guard Ian Clark's insane 55.9 percent clip. Clark is the team's leading scorer at 18.9 points per game.

Belmont is not a team to look over and the two teams know they are in for a good game:

"They're kind of unique, in that, like a lot of schools that aren't from BCS conferences, you can't go out and get four big guys. So they play threes at the four and twos at the three."

The game starts at 6 p.m. CT at Allen Fieldhouse.

Coming off a blowout win over Colorado, Kansas will play Belmont on Dec. 15.

Few teams have given Kansas any problems since a narrow loss to Michigan State back in November. The Jayhawks will try to dispatch of Belmont with that same ease.

Riding a six-game winning streak, No. 9 Kansas will play the Bruins on Dec. 15, after a week off following its blowout victory over Colorado. The non-conference game will be another chance for the Jayhawks to boost their record and sharpen their skills in the weeks leading up to a huge matchup with No. 7 Ohio State on Dec. 22.

Since that game against Michigan State, which Kansas lost, 67-64, the Jayhawks haven't gotten much of a challenge. During the six-game win streak, Kansas has won all but one of its games by double digits, including the most recent pounding of Colorado, 90-54. Only Oregon State, which lost by just six points, has kept it close against the Jayhawks.

Belmont, which will play Middle Tennessee State on Dec. 13 before coming to Lawrence, started the season hot at 4-0 but has hit a rough patch lately. The Bruins had lost two of their last three, falling to Northeastern and VCU, before crushing Lipscomb University, 100-66. Belmont's Ian Clark nailed seven three-pointers en route to 30 points in the win; he's the Bruins' leading scorer with 19.4 points per game.

Tipoff for Saturday's game will be at 7 pm ET.
