Sporting Kansas City looks to close the regular season with a victory and cement its hold atop the Eastern Conference on Wednesday when it hosts the Philadelphia Union.
With a week to go in the regular season, there isn't really a lot of drama left in the playoff chase, as all 10 tickets have been punched. In the East, KC leads the D.C. United by three points for the top seed, 60 to 57. Trailing are the Chicago Fire with 56 points, New York Red Bulls with 54 and Houston Dynamo with 53. Philadelphia is out of playoff contention in eighth place with 36 points. A KC win over Philadelphia Wednesday would clinch the top seed in the conference.
In the Western Conference, the San Jose Earthquakes have clinched the Supporters' Shield with a league-best 65 points. Trailing in the West are Seattle and Real Salt Lake with 56 points, the L.A. Galaxy with 51 and Vancouver with 42 points.
The playoffs begin on Oct. 31 when the No. 4 and 5 seeds from the East play for a chance to meet the conference's top seed, which right now would be Sporting KC.
Wednesday's game begins at 7:30 p.m. CT and will be televised by NBC Sports Network.
