Roger Espinoza injury: Sporting KC midfielder still out

Sporting KC midfielder Roger Espinoza is a game-time decision for the team's regular-season finale Wednesday against Philadelphia.

Sporting KC needs a win over Philadelphia on Wednesday to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference on its own terms, but it's unclear if the team will have midfielder Roger Espinoza for the regular-season finale.

Espinoza has missed two weeks with an ankle injury, and according to the team website, could be a game-time decision for Wednesday's game. On Monday, he told MLSSoccer.com: "If the game was right now, I couldn't play."

Espinoza was hurt in stoppage time of KC's 1-1 draw at Columbus on Oct. 7. He hasn't played since, including missing Honduras' World Cup qualifiers and Sporting KC's scoreless draw at New York on Sunday. Espinoza said coach Peter Vermes will let the player decide if he's ready to return to the pitch or not:

"I've been here for a while, and I think Peter knows me," Espinoza said. "I've had sprained ankles before, even though this one's a little different. But the injured guy's the one who should decide, right?"

Sporting KC's regular-season finale against Philadelphia takes place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night and will be televised by NBC Sports Network.
