Fresh off its 2012 Open Cup title, Sporting Kansas City has bolstered its roster. Kansas City acquired midfielder Josh Gardner from the Montreal Impact in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, according to the team's website. Sporting had originally acquired the pick in a trade with New York Red Bulls in August.
Gardner said he's hoping to vie for minutes at left back and left wing. Gardner appeared in just nine games last season for the expansion Impact. Before that, he started 21 of 22 games for the Columbus Crew during the 2011 season. Gardner added he thinks Sporting's extended season, thanks to its participation in the Champions League, will mean more playing time. Gardner was part of the 2006 Los Angeles Galaxy team that also participated in the Champions League.
Gardner adds some left side depth that was left exposed when Michael Harrington was traded to Portland for allocation money.
